Humanity was bound for the stars. In the wake of Earth's near annihilation the Robotech Expeditionary Force set out to find new worlds to colonize so that that humanity would never face total extinction again. When the location of the Robotech homeworld was found the REF Pioneer Mission was sent to negotiate a lasting peace between the Robotech Masters and Earth, but when they arrived it was discovered that the Robotech Masters had already left for Earth. The REF starship Wayfarer was sent back to warn Earth of the coming threat. It never made it.
