Europe - 2028

Estimated Population: ~127,000,000

Europe was utterly devastated by the Zentraedi assault on Earth. Almost the entire continent was razed to the ground. Only Scandinavia, Iceland, Ireland and parts of Scotland, Germany, and Russia survived.

Scandinavia Quadrant

Estimated Population: ~50,000,000

Encompassing Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark this region was remarkably untouched by the Zentraedi assault in 2011 and during the reconstruction Scandinavia became the seat of the restored United World Government and later the United Earth Government. In the aftermath of the Rain of Death, millions of refugees from across Europe streamed towards the relatively unscathed Scandinavian countries. Thousands died en route in these desperate pilgrimages, and thousands more died when they were refused entry to the overcrowded Quadrant. The influx of refugees tripled the population before the surviving government forces were able to seal the borders. Today the Quadrant is a mix of high technology and industrial areas side by side with squalid refugee camps. The Army of the Southern Cross has a major presence throughout the Scandinavia Quadrant and serves to protect the United Earth Government from external threats as well as maintain order.

Iceland Quadrant

Estimated Population: ~250,000

Iceland was virtually untouched by the Zentraedi onslaught. Too far from Europe to receive any refugees, the population has remained at its pre-war levels and the way of life is virtually unchanged. The primary industry in Iceland is the fishing industry.

Eastern Bloc Soviet Independent State (E.B.S.I.S.)

Estimated Population: ~75,000,000 (European Zone)

See the EBSIS page for details.

Kingdom of Ireland

Estimated Population: ~1,750,000

Ireland is an independent nation as much by its own choice as by fate. The luck of the Irish kept the island relatively unscathed during the Zentraedi onslaught and it was not until after the First Robotech War that the country's troubles began. With no Zentraedi presence, nor any other major strategic value, the RDF and the UWG largely ignored Ireland during the early phase of the Reconstruction. What Ireland did have was a refugee problem. Thousands of refugees from England, Wales, and Scotland who were unwilling or unable to cross the English Channel into mainland Europe, or brave the North Sea to cross to Scandinavia, instead chose to flee to the Emerald Isle. Ireland, accustomed to being the source of refugees and not the destination, was completely unprepared for the sudden influx. Eventually the Irish realized that for the first time in ages they were in sole control of their country and the last thing they wanted to do was share. Old hatreds resurfaced and the English, Welsh, and Scottish refugees soon found themselves the targets of increasing violence. Once the Irish had their fill of fighting the refugees, they turned on each other and the island descended into chaos. Like in ancient times Ireland was divided, with dozens of "chieftains" controlling their own territories. When Colonel Charles O'Rourke, the commander of the remaining RDF forces on the island, realized that Ireland had effectively been abandoned by the UWG he set out to bring peace to the country himself. With a near monopoly on Robotech mecha Col. O'Rourke was able to quickly overcome all opposition. With Dublin as his base of operations, O'Rourke got all of the chieftains to swear allegiance to him. The chieftains had little choice as O'Rourke had the firepower to take out any of them. With the island at relative peace O'Rourke then declared himself King Charles I of the new Kingdom of Ireland. O'Rourke mainly concerns himself with maintaining peace between the different territories and leaves the regional governing to the chieftains. If any number of chieftains were to band together they could likely overthrow King Charles, but that level of cooperation is not likely at this stage. Today the Kingdom of Ireland is effectively back in the Middle Ages, with little or no technology or industry to speak of.
