School's In

November 23, 2017 - in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada a pair of teenagers, Zehra Darzi and Ahmed Koury, are driving home from an event late one night when Ahmed's car mysteriously breaks down on a deserted stretch of road. Unable to get a signal on their cellphones the pair head for the nearest building, an abandoned high school that they think they can hear music coming from. Inside the school another teenager, Eileen Luna, has snuck into the school to play her bass guitar and do some tagging.

The music has attracted someone else's attention. Maryanne O'Nell doesn't know where she is, or how she got here from New York City, but there is music coming from that darkened building so she heads in that direction. Back on the street, off-duty paramedic Logan MacLean comes across Ahmed's abandoned car. Suspecting the people from the car have headed for the abandoned high school he heads there himself to make sure everything is alright.

In the gym, Eileen's guitar playing is interrupted by Maryanne, who is still confused about where she is and how she got there. Meanwhile, elsewhere in the school Ahmed and Zehra are walking down a hall of lockers when suddenly one of the lockers flies open and Ahmed is pulled inside before the locker door slams shut. Zehra's scream draws the attention of the others who come to investigate.

Logan is the first the reach Zehra, followed shortly by Eileen and Maryanne. The three find it hard to believe what Zehra claims happened, but it soon becomes apparent that there is something unnatural in the school. The four quickly find that none of the doors will open, nor can they seem to break any windows to get out of the building. They pass through the gym to the swimming pool, dogged by strange ghostly apparitions. In the changing rooms Zehra finds an old Swatch Watch stuffed back against a wall above some lockers and, sensing something strange about it, she takes it from its hiding place.

The group move upstairs, seeking to escape whatever is hunting them. In a corridor another locker swings open, revealing nothing but impenetrable blackness and floating in that blackness are the bone-white jaws of some predator. Black tendrils shoot out and wrap around Eileen, trying to pull her into the locker. The others grab hold and are barely able to pull Eileen free, then they run for a nearby classroom to find shelter.

The room appears to be an English classroom, with the last day's lesson still on the chalkboard and the teacher's copy of King Lear on the front desk. The quartet try to figure out what is happening, and Eileen relates what little she knows of the school - mainly that it was abandoned back in 1986 after an incident, but there are no details about what the incident actually was. Since then the school has remained abandoned and fenced off, with a reputation of being haunted and rumors of kids staying overnight for dares and some of them never being seen again.

On the theory that whatever happened in 1986 is related to what is happening to them now the four search the classroom for clues. Other than the appearance that the classroom had been abandoned quickly in mid-class there is little to discern, until Zehra goes through the teacher's desk. While the desk itself contains various notes and a handful of presumably confiscated items, the copy of King Lear has a strange looking coin tucked into its pages. As Zehra takes the coin there is a loud noise and everyone turns to realize that the floor has just given way under Logan, sending him tumbling into a classroom on the floor below.

The other three race down to check on Logan, who luckily is just bruised and not more seriously injured. The four once again sense the creature stalking down the halls and they race to the other wing of the school. In the cafeteria they use tables and chairs to barricade the door then explore further. An adjacent corridor leads past the school offices to an auditorium, where they are again set upon by the creature. Running back out they notice something odd in the graduating class pictures hanging in the hallway by the offices.

Pausing in their flight the four take a closer look noting that each picture contains a group photo of one year's graduating class apparently taken in the cafeteria and they realize that in each photo from 1975 until the final one for 1986 the cola vending machine in the cafeteria appears identical, completely unchanged for over a decade right down to the Out of Order sign attached to it. They race back into the cafeteria and see that the cola machine is still there looking exactly the same, even its Out of Order sign apparently untouched by time during the three decades since the school was abandoned.

The shadowy creature enters the cafeteria in pursuit and out of desperation Zehra pulls out the strange coin she found in the book and inserts into the cola machine's coin slot. Suddenly the front of the machine swings open like a door, revealing some kind of hidden room or something behind it. The four run in, pulling the door closed behind them. Even in the dim light they realize something is off, as the strange room they have entered is too wide, and the ceiling too high, for it to actually fit in the space that would have been behind the wall the cola machine was against. They take notice of a strange six-sided table in the center of the room, its surface covered in what appears to be random junk including a Casio™ synthesizer keyboard, a Speak & Spell™ toy, and an old Commodore VIC-20™ home computer (with no monitor or television attached to act as a screen).

Suddenly the Speak & Spell™ comes to life, and the words "SHADOW HUNTER DETECTED EMERGENCY PROTOCOL ENGAGED." begin scrolling across its screen. More lights begin to play across the various pieces of junk on the table and in the center of it all a strange column of what looks like metal pipes and fluorescent light tubes starts to light up and move up and down. A strange grinding, wheezing noise echoes around the room and everything begins to shake. When the shaking subsides after several minutes the strange console-like table in the center goes still and dark, leaving the place illuminated solely by a faint glow from an unseen source.

The four catch their breath and take a look at their surroundings, using their cell phones as flashlights in the dimness. The walls and floor seem reminiscent of the school, with papers scattered around and walls and floors that seem to mimic the classrooms; there is even a chalkboard on one wall, though no chalk or eraser to be seen. In the far corners are a pair of wrought-iron spiral staircases leading up to a walkway that goes around three sides of the room, and looming above the short hallway leading from the cola machine entrance is what looks like the interior of a clock tower similar to the one that sits atop Centennial High School. The clock face and, apparently non-functional, clock face can be seen from below, all of which is architecturally impossible given where the cola machine was located in the school cafeteria.

Zehra climbs up to the walkway and goes over to the clock face, which she realizes she can look through and apparently see what is outside the cola machine. Looking out now, rather than seeing the cafeteria or the grounds in front of the school Zehra instead sees a clear night sky over a partially wooded area. She relays this to the others and they cautiously open the "door" back out of the cola machine. What they see matches what Zehra has reported; the cola machine appears to be sitting in a clearing amongst some trees under a nighttime sky.

The four exit and began exploring the area around them, Zehra making sure she still has the strange coin that caused the cola machine to open for them originally. They hear the sound of running water nearby and pushing through some trees come out at the top of a hill looking down at a river, with churning rapids and a waterfall visible. On an island in the river the four can see what looks like an encampment of some kind. After a moment Zehra and Eileen both come to the realization that they recognize where they are - they are looking down at the Ottawa River and Chaudière Falls, except the entire area is wilderness instead of the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau and the people in the encampment on the island, now recognized as Victoria Island, appear to be Native Algonquin fishermen.

Before the shock of realizing that they are still in Ottawa but somehow centuries in the past can settle in, let along wear off, the four hear a strange noise and look up as a large metallic disk covered in lights flies overhead.

Chariot of the Gods?

The Centennial High escapees have barely come to terms with the fact that a bigger-on-the-inside cola machine has transported them centuries into the past to pre-Columbian Ottawa. Now they must deal with the arrival of a Flying Saucer on the scene. The four cautiously head in the direction they saw the Saucer flying and eventually come to a break in some trees where they see that the craft has landed in a clearing nearby. Up close the thing is definitely an alien spacecraft, a metallic dish maybe 30 meters across, with a ring of round windows around the middle and small domes bulging out of the top and bottom in the center making it close to 10 meters in height. The whole thing is balanced on four protruding struts and a ramp has been lowered revealing a yellow-green light from inside.

Cries of alarm draw the group's attention back to the river. They head over for a look and see that two green-skinned humanoids in spacesuits, accompanied by a nearly 3-meter tall robot of some kind, are accosting the encampment on Victoria Island. Logan and Maryanne both run down to see if they can help the Algonquin Natives, leaving a bewildered Eileen and Zehra who wonder what the two hope to accomplish. Not much it turns out; though the pair manage to distract the two aliens from the encampment, it simply draws the attention to themselves and the aliens fire on Logan and Maryanne with some strange weapons, stunning them both and getting the robot to take them back to the aliens' ship.

Zehra and Eileen follow, trying to avoid being seen by the aliens. The robot is sent back out on patrol to look for more strangers, because the aliens realize that their captives are not locals. Before Zehra or Eileen can do anything the robot finds the cola machine and carries it back to the alien spacecraft. After debating what to do, both Zehra and Eileen decide to try and sneak aboard the flying saucer to hopefully free Logan and Maryanne and locate the cola machine.

After observing the craft for a while from the tree line the two eventually see the robot go out again, possibly searching for them. After it has gone from the clearing Eileen and Zehra quietly approach the ramp and are able to enter the spacecraft apparently unobserved. They begin exploring and have to hide inside what appears to be one of the alien's crew quarters when they hear someone moving down the same hallway they are in. When the coast is clear they emerge and are able to locate where Maryanne and Logan are being held.

With some trial and error Zehra and Eileen are able to deactivate the force fields holding Logan and Maryanne. The four then search for where the cola machine might be. Just as they manage to locate it in a cargo hold there is an alarm - the aliens have discovered the breakout and have summoned the robot back to help them capture the escapees and whoever helped them. Zehra uses the coin to open the cola machine and the foursome go back inside, but they see no way to activate whatever it was that caused the machine to bring them here in the first place.

As they try to find a way to activate the cola machine's functions the four realize that the spacecraft is taking off. The aliens must realize they are still aboard and figure it will be easier to deal with the intruders if they cut off the primary escape route. The four wonder if maybe the cola machine needs to be recharged or something so in desperation they try and rip up some power cables from inside the cargo hold. They hear the robot approaching and close the cargo hold door, with Eileen disabling the door controls to force the robot to use brute force to get in.

While Maryanne keeps watch Logan helps Eileen get one end of a power cable free from an accessway under the cargo hold floor. Zehra, meanwhile, has discovered that the pillar the central console sits on has panels and she opens one. Not knowing what else to do the quartet shove one end of the power cable into the open panel. Just as the robot breaks in the central console comes to life, with the mishmash of electronics scattered across it lighting up. They quickly disconnect the power cable and close the door to the cola machine. With the robot trying to break down the door they race around the console pushing buttons and turning dials to try and get something to happen. Finally Eileen pulls down a large switch and the strange mechanism at the center of the console lights up again and starts moving up and down as the cola machine again starts making the wheezing and grinding noise like it did when it first took them from the high school cafeteria.

Soon they can no longer hear the robot banging on the cola machine door; but where, and when, will they wind up this time?

Out of This World

Has it been hours or days since the bigger-on-the-inside cola machine dematerialized from the cargo hold of a flying saucer? The passage of time seems a little fluid to the reluctant passengers, but maybe that's normal for a time machine? It feels like the machine is moving, a general sense that it is taking the reluctant passengers somewhere, and somewhen.

When the time machine "lands" the group goes outside to explore. They find themselves in a tropical jungle thick with vegetation. Through gaps in the canopy they catch a glimpse of a sky with purple-tinged clouds, a blue colored sun, and three different sized moons; so they definitely are not on Earth anymore.

Zehra stumbles down a steep incline and the others have to work their way down to where she had fallen. At the bottom the group find themselves in a gulley with a small stream and they decide to follow the stream to see where it leads. They suddenly noticed that the vegetation is moving and both Logan and Maryanne are enveloped by thick, thorny vines. When the two are cut by some of the thorns they became dizzy and soon pass out - the thorns contain a deadly poison!

Using her pocket knife Eileen is able to free Maryanne and Logan from the vines, but the two are still unconscious and their breathing is becoming shallow. Zehra and Eileen start to drag their compatriots, but it is clear they will not be able to pull them back up the incline to where the cola machine is. A noise gets the attention of the pair, and they realize they are surrounded by a trio of honest-to-goodness aliens. The three are human-sized and shaped, but with blue skin and canine-like heads, and are dressed in primitive looking roughly-woven garb and carrying stone-tipped spears. When one of the three starts talking Eileen and Zehra are shocked to hear it speaking in English!

Two of the dog people pick up the unconscious Logan and Maryanne while the other motions for Eileen and Zehra to head down a rough path. With no real options the two follow orders and soon emerge into an area that has been cleared of vegetation. A rough roadway of large stone slabs leads to a mud hut village inside a compound with tall wooden walls. Eileen, Zehra, and the unconscious Logan and Maryanne are taken into one of the huts, where an older woman blue dog person approaches them. She is Yrzma, the elder of the village and after a quick examination confirms that Maryanne and Logan have been poisoned and that without a cure they will be dead in a few days. Yrzma is a shaman and knows how to mix the cure, but one of the ingredients is a rare flower that grows only in the mountains and the village does not have enough on hand to create enough of the cure for Logan and Maryanne.

Zehra and Eileen volunteer to retrieve more of the flower, and Yrzma will provide them with some help. A pair of skilled scouts from the village, Arak and Paz, agree to lead to expedition and they are also joined by a woman named Ursa. Ursa is not from the same people as the villagers she is a humanoid, about 5 feet tall but stocky, with a mix of human, rodent and bear-like features. Ursa is also dressed differently, with more refined clothing including a leather-like vest, like something from the Middle Ages on Earth. Ursa is a mining engineer where she comes from, which is apparently not this planet. She tells Zehra and Eileen that she was digging tunnels in a mine one day and when she emerged she found herself on this planet and had no idea how she had gotten here. Going back into the tunnel led her to somewhere that definitely was not the mine she had been working in, so she explored a bit and was found and welcomed by the villagers. In exchange she has been helping them improve the infrastructure of the village, including helping build the stone slab roadway outside.

The expedition is equipped with some supplies and heads out at dawn the next day. As they head towards the mountain Ursa explains that there does not appear to be any animal life on the planet other than the dog people, and it is possible that they are not native to this world any more than Ursa is. Instead the vegetation on the planet has evolved into several of the niches occupied by animals on other planets, apparently including a few species of mobile carnivorous plants. During their trek the expedition has to fight off attacks by several aggressive types of plants but they eventually reach the mountains, with the sparser vegetation giving them a reprieve.

The group is able to find some of the plant they need and swiftly return to the village, arriving with little time to spare. Thankfully Yrzma is able to quickly mix up the cure to the poison and Logan and Maryanne are saved. With Logan and Maryanne cured of the poison the group can head back to the time machine, with some help from the villagers. Ursa asks to come along with the group, hoping to someday find a way back to her home. Given that she helped save Logan and Maryanne's life it is hard to say no.

When the group does return to the time machine they have to hack it free from vegetation that has enveloped it, and when they get inside everyone is surprised to see that the front room has changed - the layout is the same but it looks much cleaner than before. The console itself looks like it is still made up of the same junk, the mixture of 1970s and 80s electronics, as before. On the base of the console they see a small embossed label or plaque of some kind that reads Time And Relative Dimension In Space - TARDIS; could this be what the time machine is called?

Eileen starts pressing buttons and hitting keys when the Speak & Spell on the console suddenly pipes up saying that "coordinates have been entered". Zehra pulls the master switch and the time machine is off to its next mysterious destination!

Wendigo

While the time machine is in flight the quintet take the time to explore what might be their home for the foreseeable future. At the back of the main control room with the console are a pair of parallel hallways. Eileen uses the cans of spray paint she carries for tagging to mark the halls so people do not get lost and the group heads off. The hallways have the superficial appearance of halls in a school, very much like those of Centennial High School. The floor looks like it is covered in vinyl tiles dirtied by the footsteps of hundreds of sneakers, the walls are a drab faded neutral greenish-beige color, and the doors are mostly a faded wood color with frosted windows set in the top. It soon becomes apparent that the machine is much, much larger than the group first realized.

The exploration turns up dormitory-style rooms where the group can sleep; school bathrooms as well as boys and girls changing rooms complete with shower facilities; a school cafeteria and kitchen replete with food, mainly processed and frozen foods that seem to be from the 1970s or 80s; school library; a swimming pool; tennis courts; and a massive room with multiple levels and every wall covered in what look like school lockers, but inside each locker is a different outfit or piece of clothing ranging from medieval looking stuff to futuristic looking jumpsuits as well as a variety of outerwear for just about any type of weather.

The group are still getting their bearings when they realize that the machine, this TARDIS, appears to have reached wherever it was headed. The five return to the main console room and once again Zehra goes up and takes a look through the clock face. Outside she can see forest and a darkening sky. The forest looks Earth-like, mostly evergreens, so maybe the machine has taken them home?

Cautiously the five exit the TARDIS and take a look around. As they explore the woods a fog begins to roll in and soon they have lost track of where the TARDIS is. Worse, Eileen becomes separated from the rest. Zehra, Logan, Maryanne and Ursa keep searching, hoping to find Eileen or the TARDIS and eventually come across a river. They start to follow the river and suddenly they find themselves surrounded by what looks like a group of Viking warriors!

Like before, the group are able to understand the Vikings, who to the four sound like they are speaking in English (or in Ursa's case, sound like they are speaking her native tongue). The Vikings warn the group that they are in danger and must find shelter before night falls. The Vikings offer to bring the four back to their settlement for the night. Logan wants to stay out looking for Eileen, but the Vikings say it is too dangerous, that there is a monster that hunts the woods at night. Reluctantly the group opt to join the Vikings.

The Viking settlement is further down the river, a small collection of longhouses protected by a large wooden wall. Inside the four are introduced to the leader of the settlement, a man named Ingval Thorgrim. The settlement was started a year earlier, when the nearby hills were found to be rich in gold and other valuable minerals. The settlement was thriving at first, but things went bad a few months earlier when some of the men started to go missing. According to the Vikings, the "Skraelings" told them that the men were being taken by something called a Wendigo. Hearing the Vikings use the terms Skraeling and Wendigo makes Zehra realize that they are somewhere in North America; Skraeling being the term the Vikings used for natives of Greenland and North America, and Wendigo being a creature from Native American legend. Zehra presses for more detail the Vikings so talk of their journey across the ocean. Based on the descriptions and rough maps Zehra pegs the date at around 1020 AD and that the settlement is further inland than any previously known, apparently somewhere in what in the present day is the province of Quebec.

Meanwhile, back in the woods Eileen has become hopelessly lost in the fog. She starts to hear strange sounds, and manages to climb a tree where she hopes she will be safe. After spending a sleepless night up the tree, once it is light enough and fog has cleared Eileen comes down and resumes her search. She is eventually able to find her way back to the cola machine, but Zehra has the coin that is needed to open the door to get inside. After fervently knocking and no one answering Eileen figures that others have not made it back and so she sets off back into the woods to look for them.

Come morning Eileen's friends at the settlement are eager to set off in search of her. Ingval offers to help and sends three of his men to go with the group; Rolf, Ivar, and a skilled tracker named Jorund. The group head out, heading back up the river to where the Vikings first encountered the lost time travelers. From there they head back into the woods searching for any sign of Eileen. Jorund is able to find some strange tracks, which Logan is able to recognize as coming from Eileen's sneakers so the group tries to follow them. The tracks soon become mixed with some that do not belong to any animal that Jorund or the other Vikings can recognize.

Fearing that Eileen may have become a victim of the Wendigo the group tries to follow the strange tracks. They lead up out of the forest and into the rocky hills, where the tracks thin out and vanish. Ursa, with her years of experience as a miner and almost supernatural sense for rock is able to discern that there are a series of tunnels and caves beneath the hills. With Ursa taking the lead the group finds a cave leading into the rock and the group heads in. The Vikings light some torches and the group starts to explore. The cave leads to the tunnels that Ursa sensed and as they go deeper in Ursa is able to identify many veins of gold and silver.

Eventually the tunnels lead to a massive cavern, far too large for the torches to illuminate more than a fraction of it. To their horror the group realize that the floor of the cavern is covered in bones, both animal and human. The Vikings identify some scraps of leather and equipment as belonging to some the missing men from their settlement. Suddenly a massive figure lurches out of the darkness. Caught by surprise the group are too slow to react as the thing grabs Ivar. The creature, surely the Wendigo, has dragged Ivar back into the darkness where the group can only hear his echoing screams before Ivar goes silent.

Rolf and Jorund prepare to fight, with Logan and Maryanne ready to join them, but Zehra and Ursa persuade them that it would be better to retreat and return with more men. The semi-reluctant group begins to fall back along the tunnels, with Ursa guiding them. The Wendigo pursues and is gaining quickly. Rolf stays behind as a rear guard, but as the group nears the cave where they first came in it becomes clear that he too has fallen to the creature. With the Wendigo closing in on them Ursa makes a desperate move; taking a quick assessment of the tunnel they are in she waits until the last possible second before striking the ceiling with her pickaxe, swinging with all her might. Ursa's assessment allowed her to identify a weak point in the tunnel, and her blows start a cave-in just as the Wendigo is closing in.

As the dust from the cave-in settles the rest of the group have managed to reach the outside, but soon Logan and Maryanne dive back into the cave to search for Ursa. After digging through some of the rubble they are able to pull her free. Behind her the rest of the cave and tunnel have completely collapsed, hopefully burying the Wendigo within. The group slowly make their way back to the settlement where surprisingly they find Eileen. Having had no luck at the TARDIS, Eileen had eventually gone back into the woods to search for the others. When she came across the river she followed it and found the settlement, but she learned from the Vikings that the search party had set out hours earlier and it would be difficult to catch up with them. Instead Eileen decided to wait at the settlement for everyone to return.

Jorund informs Ingval and the rest of the settlement of the groups' encounter with the Wendigo and the loss of Rolf and Ivar. As for the time travelers, now that they have reunited they stay at the settlement for another day before bidding farewell to the Vikings and finding their way back to the TARDIS. With still no idea how to operate the TARDIS the group once again randomly push buttons and flip switches until the Speak & Spell eventually indicates that some kind of destination coordinates have been input and they pull the main lever that triggers the time machine to head off to who knows where and when.

Maple Leaf Forever

When the TARDIS lands this time the travelers discover they have materialized in an alley. Heading out to the street the three from modern day Ottawa recognize the location as Yonge Street in Toronto. The presence of the landmark Sam the Record Man store places them at least a decade before 2017, but so far it is the closest they have come to returning home. Something seems off though, as despite it being daytime the street is devoid of cars, and people for that matter.

Further exploration reveals a similarly deserted and shuttered Eaton Centre and, continuing down Yonge Street, those familiar with Toronto begin to suspect that they may not be where they think they are. Eventually the street ends in what appears to be a waterfront park overlooking Lake Ontario. There are a handful of people around, all dressed in what appears to be late 20th Century clothing. The group spots some people entering partially concealed sliding doors and they follow through. On the other side it becomes abundantly clear that they really are not in Toronto, at least not any Toronto they are familiar with.

On the other side of the door is a wide, futuristic walkway set against the base of a massive transparent dome. Behind them, where the waterfront was, is a large curving wall. Outside of the dome the group can see strange stars and a large glowing nebula - the dome is in deep space. The waterfront, and even the sky over the city, is some kind of illusion. They explore a bit and notice far off to one side there is another gigantic dome, attached to one they are in by a series of large tubes. Overwhelmed, the group take a door back through the wall and emerge in another part of the waterfront of the false Toronto.

As the group tries to get their bearings they spot a figure in an alley trying to get their attention. When they go over they find a teenage boy and girl who ask Zehra and Eileen what they think they are doing wandering around in broad daylight. When becomes clear that none of the group understand what they are talking about the two hurry everyone into a hiding place out of sight. The group have questions but the two won't answer them, saying they need to get somewhere safe first. The teens pull up a manhole cover and lead the group down below the street. Instead of a sewer the group find they are in some kind of maintenance tunnel and they follow the two teens through a confusing set of turns before they climb up to street level again.

The pair have led the group to what appears to be the University of Toronto campus, or at least the replica of U of T in this strange facsimile of Toronto. In one of the buildings there is a cluster of other teenagers. Finally the two that led the group here introduce themselves; they are named George and Nancy, and they and the other teenagers are call themselves the Ess'N'Eff. Nancy introduces one of the older teens as Jimmy and say he is their leader. Listening to what the teens have to say and asking questions the group slowly piece together where they actually are and what the situation is.

The TARDIS has brought them to a massive starship, a generation ship moving slowly through space. The ship is, for all intents and purposes, Canada. The details the teens know are sketchy, but apparently some kind of disaster forced humanity to abandon the Earth, and this ship contains the population that was evacuated from Canada, or more accurately the descendants of those who were evacuated. The ship is made up of a set of giant domes; each dome representing a province or territory with an additional dome known as the En-See-Arr (which Zehra and Logan figure must means the NCR or National Capital Region, the seat of government). The domes are connected in a rough imitation of the geographic layout of Canada; so the Ontario dome (where they currently are) connects to the Manitoba and Quebec domes, though the Quebec dome apparently declared independence generations ago and has sealed off the tunnels connecting it to the rest of the domes. The exception is the En-See-Arr dome which has direct connections to all the domes (except the Quebec dome). Each dome is built around a replica of the provincial or territorial capital, but the primary living areas surround the cities are called suburbs or subdivisions.

Originally the ship was governed by the elected Prime Minister and the Members of Parliament, with the Senate and Governor General also still existing in more or less the same form that Zehra, Eileen and Logan are familiar with. A few generations ago, however, there was apparently some kind of coup and now the ship is run by a dictatorial government under a figure known only as the Minister Prime, who maintains order with the help of the forces of the Arcee-Empee. The CBC was replaced by the Sunshine News Network, which broadcasts propaganda for the Minister Prime. The population of the domes live in the suburbs and commute into the cities during the day to work, only to return to the suburbs after work where they all live a mundane existence being brainwashed by the broadcasts of the Sunshine Network.

Children are not permitted to leave the suburbs, and spend their days in schools being brainwashed to serve the Minister Prime. The Ess'N'Eff are what passes for an underground resistance, in Ontario dome at least; kids who skip school and leave the suburbs to hide out in the city. It becomes apparent that the kids' knowledge of Canadian history is pretty sparse, and a little warped. Eileen figures out the Ess'N'Eff is "S" and "F", standing for "Strong and Free", so they must have picked up a little something. Other parts of their knowledge is more warped; for example the kids know nothing of hockey. When the group mention some teams the kids relate what they know as the myth of why the Maple Leaf on the Canadian flag was read. According to what they learned the Maple Leaves used to be blue, but they battled the Canadians and were defeated and the Maple Leaves were stained red with blood.

While Zehra attempts to explain hockey to some of the kids, the others learn that a lot of national symbols, like the Maple Leaf, are actually banned by the government of Minister Prime. Logan suddenly gets very worried - the TARDIS is still stuck looking like a cola machine, a cola machine with a giant Maple Leaf on the front. The Ess'N'Eff say it is dangerous to start wandering the city now that it is after working hours, but the group manage to convince the teens to help them get back to where the TARDIS landed. Cutting through the abandoned Eaton Centre the time travelers learn just how dangerous things are after dark as they are chased by a gang of cannibals. They evade their pursuers and reach Yonge Street only to discover to their horror that the TARDIS is gone!

The Ess'N'Eff take the group back to the safety of the U of T campus where they spend the night. In the morning Logan wants to risk trying to find out where the TARDIS was taken. The Ess'N'Eff take the group back into the tunnels and bring them to the Information Centre, which is what they call the building that the travelers recognize as Toronto City Hall. While Zehra and Eileen wait outside with Ursa, Logan and Maryanne go inside. Logan tries to use what he thinks is an information kiosk but the system has no record of him so will not grant him access. He looks for someone he can ask for help from and approaches a woman at a desk. Logan goes to ask his question, and out of reflex asks in both English and French. He realizes his mistake when he sees the woman's reaction; apparently French is not an official language under the Minister Prime (due to the separation of the Quebec dome and/or the authoritarian laws of Minister Prime).

Arcee-Empee troops approach and Logan and Maryanne try to flee. The Arcee-Empee are armed with stun weapons of some kind and both Logan and Maryanne are captured. The others are at risk as well, but Eileen steals one of Arcee-Empee's hover cycles and leads some of them on a wild chase. This lets Ursa and Zehra escape into the tunnels with the Ess'N'Eff, and Eileen later ditches the hover cycle and manages to evade capture before making her way into the tunnels. They may have evaded capture, but Logan and Maryanne were not so lucky. Now the remaining three have to not only figure out a way to find the TARDIS, but also have to rescue their friends!

Zehra, Eileen, and Ursa regroup with the Ess'N'Eff back at the University of Toronto to come up with a plan, any plan, to rescue Logan and Maryanne. It becomes clear that the Arcee-Empee have taken the two "terrorists" to the En-See-Arr dome, so the first order is finding a way to get there. The domes are connected by tunnels and people use magnetic rail trains to travel between domes, but the train stations have security with all traffic monitored by the Arcee-Empee.

Once again the Ess'N'Eff provide the key. Just as there are maintenance tunnels that run under the streets in the dome, there are also maintenance tunnels and cargo tunnels that parallel the transportation tunnels used by people between the domes. The danger there is that those tunnels are not intended for people and have minimal life support, if any. Still, the group have little choice and so decide to take the risk. The Ess'N'Eff agree to go along to guide the three time travelers through the tunnels, seeing this as an opportunity to strike against the autocratic government of the Minister Prime.

The group sneak into Union Station, the transport hub for the Ontario Dome. There they are able to evade the Arcee-Empee security and get into the inter-dome maintenance tunnels. From there they are able to gain access to one of the cargo tunnels. When a cargo transport approaches the Ess'N'Eff are able to slow it enough for everyone to get on board, a futuristic version of riding the boxcars. Hiding themselves on the cargo transport everyone holds on tight as the transport speeds up again and rushes towards the En-See-Arr Dome. When the cargo transport nears the En-See-Arr dome it slows, but it does not look like it is going to stop. This particular transport is apparently headed to one of the Maritime Provinces domes and uses the En-See-Arr dome to route around the closed-off Quebec Dome. The group hastily jump off and break into another set of maintenance tunnels.

Emerging from the maintenance tunnels the group find themselves in a facsimile of downtown Ottawa, replete with Parliament Buildings, the War Memorial, Sparks Street, the Rideau Canal, and the Chateau Laurier. The transport hub appears to be the old train station across from the Chateau Laurier. With a rough idea of the geography the three Ottawa natives are able to lead the group to the dome's version of the University of Ottawa campus. There they meet with this dome's Ess'N'Eff cell and bring those youth up to speed and ask for any help they can provide.

The Ottawa Ess'N'Eff unfortunately seem to have little information. They do not know where prisoners are taken; anyone arrested by the Arcee-Empee seems to just disappear, except for those under age who are sent back to the suburbs for re-education. Some of them think there is a place where many of the government's secrets can be found, but many think it is just a myth. The group ask anyway, and learn that according to legend the government of Minister Prime keeps its secrets hidden in the Lake. The group ponder this, wondering if it means the Great Lakes, or maybe one of the large lakes in Western Canada. Finally Zehra figures it out - it doesn't mean "Lake" like the body of water, or more accurately not "Lac", the French for lake, but LAC - Library and Archives Canada!

Zehra, Eileen and Ursa, along with a small group of Ess'N'Eff members, make their way cautiously over to the Library and Archives Canada building, which is thankfully in the same place it is in the real Ottawa. For a place that supposedly holds secrets the building the security does not seem to be excessively strong. Using the maintenance tunnels the small group are able to gain entrance. Inside they look for some kinds of records storage or computer system, but are surprised at the sparseness of the facility. While searching what they thought was an empty building for information the group comes across several figures, men and women all in drab grey uniforms walking about but seemingly ignoring the presence of the intruders. Suddenly one of the figures turns to face the group.

"My name is Jon Prester; Librarian, Archivist, and Keeper of Faith. How may I help you?"

The group are shocked, but Zehra decides to go with it and starts quizzing the Archivist. He turns out to be very informative, providing not only the location where Logan and Maryanne are being held (apparently in two different locations, with Logan much harder to get to) but also filling in some details of how the Minister Prime seized power and how he keeps it. Based on the information the three time travelers and the Ess'N'Eff rebels start to formulate a plan that will not only free Maryanne and Logan but could possibly even topple the Minister Prime's autocratic regime. Zehra thanks Jon Prester for his help and the group sneak back out of the Library and Archives building.

For the first phase of their plan the group head to nearby Sparks Street. There Zehra and Eileen point out the darkened and sealed off building of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. If the information Jon Prester provided was right, inside they would find communication equipment that would let the Ess'N'Eff broadcast their own message to oppose the propaganda of the Minster Prime's Sunshine Network. Making such a broadcast will of course attract the attention of the Arcee-Empee, but that would also provide a distraction for the next phase of the plan. The group are able to sneak around the barriers and get into the CBC building. Inside they locate the broadcasting equipment and, with Zehra and Eileen's help the Ess'N'Eff are able to get the equipment set up for their broadcast. At the same time Ursa is able to help them set up some defensive structures to slow down anyone trying to get to them in the CBC building. With that done Eileen, Zehra, and Ursa leave to head for their next destination.

The trio leave the downtown core, heading toward the east end of the En-See-Arr dome, while sending word to the other Ess'N'Eff rebels so they could be ready for what was about to happen. Under cover of night they proceed to Sussex Drive. First they scout near the facsimile of Rideau Hall, home to the Governor General in the real Ottawa. They see that the grounds of Rideau Hall are surrounded by some kind of force field, which verifies part of what Jon Prester told them; that the Minister Prime had imprisoned the Governor General in Rideau Hall with a stasis field of some kind, freezing them in time so they could not interfere with his plans. With this confirmed the trio double back to the National Research Council site, where according to Jon Prester they will find Maryanne.

Deep inside the NRC facility, Maryanne regains consciousness to find herself strapped down to some kind of examination table in some kind of observation room. A quick look around does not reveal anyone else in the room, but she does see a table with her jacket and all the items from her pockets laid out on it. With some effort she is able to loosen the straps holding her and free herself. After gathering her things Maryanne tries the door and finds it is not locked. Exiting carefully she finds herself in a corridor. A quick examination of other nearby doors reveals a room adjacent to the one she had been held in that had a one-way mirror allowing observers to look into the room she had been held in. Maryanne sees some papers with notes apparently pertaining to her and after quickly skimming them discovers that she was brought here because the authorities had detected an unusual energy reading coming from her. She destroys the notes before leaving the room. Exploring further she discovers an emergency stairwell and begins to climb, assuming she is underground somewhere based on having not seen any windows so far. After climbing a few floors Maryanne hears the sound of another stairwell door opening. She hides as best she can in the shadows and watches as a security guard starts coming down the stairs. Luck is with her and she is not spotted, so Maryanne ambushes the security guard. Knocking him out, she takes what looks like some kind of stun weapon and what might be a security pass of some kind.

Outside the NRC facility Eileen, Zehra and Ursa are trying to find a way inside past the wall and gate. Ursa realizes that part of the area is heavily landscaped and she is able to dig beneath one area of fence to give the three a way in. Once inside the NRC grounds the three begin looking around the buildings trying to figure out which one Maryanne might be in. While they are looking they see a side door open in one of the buildings and to their surprise Maryanne emerges. They get her attention and once she has joined them bring her up to speed on what has happened. Now that Maryanne is with them the group head deeper into the NRC grounds. The grounds end on the far side at the edge of the dome itself. Ursa uses her pickaxe to force a way through into the infrastructure, but this sets off some alarms. Eileen says to leave things to her and she takes off, making sure she is spotted by the security team so she can distract them from the others.

Zehra and Maryanne squeeze through the small gap that Ursa has made, while Ursa herself remains on guard to stop anyone from going in after them. Inside the dome wall Maryanne and a reluctant Zehra begin climbing the scaffolding-like infrastructure that contains, among other things, the holographic system that projects the false sky over the city under the dome. After climbing very high Zehra at last spots what she is looking for - the device that is projecting the stasis field over Rideau Hall. The technology is beyond her, but Zehra is able to discern enough to know how to break it if she can find the right equipment. At first Zehra does not think she can do it, but then she sees the stun weapon that Maryanne had taken from the NRC security guard. Convincing Maryanne to part with the weapon, Zehra is able to use it to short out the stasis field projector.

With the job done Maryanne and Zehra climb back down, where they rejoin Ursa and then find where Eileen has gone. The four escape the NRC grounds by going under the fence again and then race for Rideau Hall. The forces of the Minister Prime have been distracted by the Ess'N'Eff broadcasting to all the domes from the CBC building so do not realize what is happening on the other side of the En-See-Arr Dome. With the stasis field down the four are able to get into Rideau Hall. They are stopped, but they quickly explain what is happening. Convincing the guards, the four are taken to the Governor General where they explain about the Minister Prime and how Rideau Hall had been frozen to keep anyone from interfering. Knowing she has to act quickly, the Governor General orders her guard to prepare to take control. Using facilities in Rideau Hall, the Governor General is able to send her own broadcast to all the provincial and territorial domes. Based on her authority she declares that the government of the Minister Prime is illegal and that she is assuming control as official Head of State until new Parliamentary elections can be held.

The Minister Prime and the Arcee-Empee leadership are caught off-guard and are unprepared for the return of the Governor General and are taken prisoner by the Governor General's Guard. With the leadership captured the rest of the Minister Prime's forces surrender. The Governor General appoints several of the Ess'N'Eff to temporary positions of authority to help maintain order while she rebuilds the democratic government.

Once the En-See-Arr Dome is under the full control of the Governor General she is able to provide the time travelers assistance in locating Logan and their TARDIS. Logan, it turns out, was sent to one of the federal prisons, which is actually in an interdimensional space where prisoners are made to work on large farms to provide food for the domes. Logan is freed, as are many other political prisoners as they are identified. The TARDIS is found in another of the NRC facility buildings, where scientists were trying to figure out what it was.

The Governor General and the Ess'N'Eff thank the group for all that they have done. Before leaving, Zehra goes to thank the Archivist Jon Prester. As the group go into the TARDIS to leave, Prester takes Zehra aside and gives her a cryptic warning:

"I shouldn't be telling you this, but I feel I must. Be warned. I know you suspect it, but I can tell you it is true... It still has your scent..."

When Zehra asks how he knows this, Prester does not say and only tells her to ask him again next time they meet. With that Zehra joins the others in the TARDIS and they once again start randomly pushing buttons and flipping switches until it appears that the machine is ready to depart, at which point they throw the dematerialization lever and depart.

Nightmare

Eileen, Logan and Maryanne awaken to find themselves on a barren hillside. There is no sign of the others or of the TARDIS, so they start to explore. With a shock Logan realizes he recognizes where they are, these are the hills of Afghanistan where he served a tour of duty while in the Canadian Army. As soon as Logan says this his clothing changes to his military uniform, and Eileen and Maryanne discover they are now also wearing Canadian army uniforms complete with gear and weapons. The air erupts in the sound of explosions and gunfire, and instinctively Logan races towards the sound of combat. Cautiously Eileen and Maryanne head off after him.

In a narrow round nestled between the hills a full-scale battle is in progress. A Canadian military vehicle is on its side in flames, with soldiers, some obviously wounded and some maybe dead, are in a gun battle with Taliban forces. Logan has already reached one of the wounded soldiers and has pulled out his medical kit. From behind cover on one of the hillsides Maryanne tells Eileen to stay down while she surveys the situation.

Logan is frantically trying to save any of the wounded soldiers that he can, but their injuries are severe and more soldiers are falling to enemy fire all around him. Up on the hill a small group of Taliban are approaching the spot where Eileen and Maryanne have taken cover. Maryanne takes them down with her rifle. A frightened Eileen shouts to get Logan's attention, but the noise also attracts the attention of more Taliban. Seeing that Eileen and Maryanne are in growing danger, Logan pulls himself away from the wounded soldiers and heads up the hill to join them. When Logan gets to their location, Maryanne yells at him that whatever is happening can't be real. It must have something to do with Logan's memories of combat, but they cannot really be back in Afghanistan in the early 2000s because that does not explain why she and Eileen suddenly had uniforms and weapons. Logan slowly realizes that Maryanne is on to something, that the whole scenario does not feel right. He, Eileen and Maryanne bolt from cover to try and flee the combat zone. The crest over another hill and lose their footing, tumbling down to the bottom and when they pull themselves to their feet...

It is nighttime and Logan, Eileen and Maryanne are in a heavily wooded area. Looking at each other, the three see that they are no longer in uniforms but are back wearing their regular clothing. The three stumble through the darkened woods before emerging into a clearing of tall grass, except the grass stalks have all been bent over so they are nearly flattened. The three spy something in the middle of the clearing and carefully approach to investigate. As they get closer they can see that the object appears to be some kind of animal carcass. Logan takes a closer look and sees that it is a cow, and that it has been mutilated in bizarre fashion. Equally strange there does not appear to be any blood around the carcass and flies and scavengers appear to be avoiding it. Maryanne also notices that the patch of grass the carcass is sitting in appears to be burned.

Eileen starts looking around nervously, fear rising in her. Suddenly the clearing is flooded with a fiery light. Hovering above the clearing is a brightly lit UFO, a flying saucer generating a strong enough downdraft that Eileen, Logan and Maryanne are having trouble staying on their feet. As the lights from the UFO flicker and dance over the three they start to hear a low-level droning sound that increases in intensity and is starting to give them powerful headaches. Eileen breaks into a full panic and runs for the trees at full speed. Maryanne and Logan take off after, trying to keep her in sight as they race to catch up.

As she tears through the forest, the terrified Eileen keeps catching glimpses of figures in the trees, grey-skinned alien shaped humanoids with oval heads and large black eyes. The sight only causes her to panic more and continue her flight. It takes a massive effort but Maryanne and then Logan are able to catch up with Eileen. Maryanne grabs hold of Eileen to stop her flight and starts shouting at her to calm down. When Logan reaches the two he starts trying to talk Eileen down from her panic. The two point out that this is probably no more real than the Afghanistan battle they just left. Slowly Eileen starts to calm herself and the three take stock of where they are. They pick out a direction that looks easier, or at least less difficult than the others, and start working their way through the tangle of trees. They are all keenly aware of the sounds of things pursuing them, but the three keep their calm and...

They emerge from an alley onto a rainy, nighttime, neon-lit city street. After second's hesitation, Maryanne suddenly starts heading down the street at a quick pace. Eileen and Logan rush to catch up while trying to get their bearings. All around are tall buildings and cars are going up and down the rain soaked streets. Eileen catches a glimpse of a yellow New York City taxicab, so does that mean they are in New York (or a facsimile at least)? Logan comes to the same conclusion when he catches a glimpse of the two towers of the World Trade Center, assuming they must be in New York but in the past. Except he soon realizes that some of the people on the street have modern cell phones, and the models of cars are too new for it to be before 2001, so where are they?

Maryanne is focused on wherever she is heading and does not respond to any of Logan or Eileen's questions. Soon she breaks off down a side street and into an alley behind one of the tall office towers. Out of sight of anyone beside Eileen and Logan, Maryanne lifts up a manhole cover and drops down. The other two are taken aback for a moment, then recover and follow Maryanne down into the New York sewers. The sewer is surprisingly roomy and not as filthy as Eileen and Logan were expecting, and Maryanne seems to have a specific destination in mind as she expertly navigates her way through the tunnels with the two in pursuit.

As they progress further Maryanne starts to get a worried expression. She comments that they should not have gotten this close without encountering someone, though she does not clarify what they are supposedly getting close to. Finally Maryanne reaches a well concealed metal door and pushes it open. Beyond is an underground space, perhaps an unfinished or abandoned subway station, which appears to have been turned into some kind of residence or base of operations. There are pieces of ratty furniture that appear to have been castoffs, arranged as a kind of living room around a shattered television set. Nearby is an area with torn multi-colored mats on the floor that might be a makeshift gym or training area, and another section has the remains of a lot of high-tech gear like computers and unidentifiable electronic equipment. Everything around has been damaged or destroyed, and a closer look shows numerous marks on the walls that could be from gunfire. Some of the floors and walls are also stained with might be splatters of blood long since dried up.

Maryanne begins a panicked search of the area, calling out for anyone but receiving no response. She starts demanding to know what happened here, though there is no one to answer. It is now Eileen and Logan's turn to calm their friend down. They point out how the other scenarios they were in could not have been real so this, whatever it is, also isn't real. Maryanne is skeptical but Eileen asks her if about what they are seeing. Even though Maryanne is refusing to give details, so Eileen says that is fine and just asks if what they are seeing would be Maryanne's worst fear or nightmare. Maryanne realizes what Eileen is getting at, and starts to look at their surroundings with a more skeptical eye.

Just then a terrifying how echoes through the sewer tunnels to where the three are. In the dim light they start to strange flickers of movement along the walls. Eileen is the first to realize that it is like the shadow thing that attacked them back at the school; maybe even the same one, what the TARDIS readouts called a Shadow Hunter. Maryanne agrees; maybe it has been trying to follow them all this time and is attacking them through their minds or their nightmares. With a greater awareness of what is probably happening to them, the three look for a way out. They appear to still be in the setting of Maryanne's nightmare scenario so they follow her as she tries to lead them out of the sewers and back up to street level. The Shadow Hunter does not appear to want to let them go that easily, and twists the dreamscape to keep bringing them back to the same room. Eileen suggests that if it is all in their minds, and their minds are linked to each other, then if they concentrate together they might be strong enough to fight it off. As the shadows gather around them the three lock hands and together start trying to force themselves out of the nightmare. At first it seems to have no effect, but then they see that their surroundings are getting brighter.

Finally with a snap the dreamscape shatters and the three open their eyes to find themselves back on the TARDIS, in the room that looks like the school nurse's office. A worried looking Zehra and Ursa are there watching over the three of them and are ecstatic that they have finally woken up. Zehra and Ursa tell Eileen, Logan and Maryanne that they have been asleep for nearly two days. The two had gone looking after there had been no sign of any of them for several hours and found each in their respective dorm rooms, but in a sleep so deep nothing Zehra or Ursa tried would wake them. Ursa was able to move all three to the nurse's office, but they still could not find a way to wake the trio. They had been worried that they would have to wait for the TARDIS to materialize wherever it was going and hope they could find some help there. Eileen, Logan and Maryanne relate what happened to them to Zehra and Ursa, including their theory that it was the Shadow Hunter. Zehra wonders if that was what the Archivist Jon Prester had meant with his cryptic warning to her, and how he could have possibly know.

Shaken by their ordeal none of the three can sleep and head for the console room to wait for the TARDIS to arrive at its next destination.

Explorers

The TARDIS has once again materialized in a forest. The travelers go out to explore while there is daylight, slowly picking their way through the woods. Suddenly they are confronted by a group of men, a mix of Europeans in centuries-old dress and Native Americans. The group are surprised to find such odd looking people here, the Native Americans telling their European companions that they have no idea who these strangers are. The TARDIS crew introduce themselves, being a little vague about where they come from. The other group then introduces themselves, they are a group of French explorers and their local guides, and the group's leader is Samuel de Champlain!

This pegs the date as likely sometime in the spring or summer of 1613, when Champlain was exploring the Ottawa River Valley. With the explorers keeping an eye on the unexpected arrivals, the TARDIS team reluctantly stay with them while looking for an opportunity to get back to the cola machine. The combined party delves further through the trees until they come to the shore of a lake. The Native Algonquin guides appear a little nervous, and Maryanne starts getting the feeling the group is being watched. Eileen and Logan think they can see shadowy figures moving through the trees, but can't be sure.

When they turn back to the trail the group realizes that some of Champlain's men who had been in the lead have disappeared. The group splits up to search the lakeside for what happened to them when out in the lake a monstrous head breaks through the surface. The Algonquin guides panic and flee into the woods while the monster starts to fire bolts of energy from its eyes. The group scatters for cover, with some of Champlain's men trying to return fire. Down at the shore a strange force takes hold of Logan, dragging him into the water. Eileen races after him but cannot reach Logan before he disappears below the water's surface.

From the trees another strange sight emerges, four reptilian humanoid figures. The creatures are human-sized, but covered in brown-green scales with a fish-like face, fin-like ears, and prominent ridges fanning out from the forehead across the top of the head. In the center of the forehead, high up, is a third eye. The four appear to be carrying pistol-like weapons of some kind, with wide conical barrels and a vaguely organic look. Champlain's men are frightened, but the remaining time travelers approach the beings and Zehra tries to talk with them.

Out of earshot of Champlain's men, Zehra and the rest are able to explain that they are from a different time period and that no one means any harm to the creatures. The creatures are eventually convinced of the team's peaceful intent (despite some of the looks that Maryanne is giving them). The creatures call themselves Silurians (or this is a near as the name seems to translate) and claim they are from Earth but the distant past, millions of years earlier. Their people went into hibernation to avoid an extinction-level event and have remained there, deep below the surface of the Earth. Periodically small scout teams are awakened to see if it is safe for the Silurians to emerge.

Zehra and the others convince Champlain and his men not to attack, and leave them on the surface under the watch of some of the Silurians. The other Silurians take the TARDIS team under the lake, where they have a small outpost. Logan and Champlain's missing men are there, in some kind of suspended animation waiting for the Silurians to examine them. The TARDIS team are able to negotiate the release of Logan and the others. The Silurians agree that it is not the right time for their people to emerge. They will release their captives, but in exchange they must be allowed to erase the memories of Champlain and his men so they forget the existence of the Silurians. The TARDIS team agree, feeling it is acceptable, especially given that their own history has no record of Champlain encountering lizard people during his exploration.

The TARDIS team, including the released Logan, return to the surface with the Silurians, who stun Champlain and his men. They erase the recent events from the minds of the explorers, leaving them near the lakeshore. When they awaken the TARDIS team spin a tale about swamp gas of some kind coming off the lake causing everyone to pass out. The TARDIS crew bid farewell, saying they have their bearings now and wish Champlain and his men good luck. Champlain and his men are convinced and they head off in search of their Algonquin guides, with Champlain wondering where he mislaid his astrolabe.

The group manage to get back to the TARDIS and once again try and figure out how to use the controls. Zehra has begun noting how the control are set when they pull the switch to dematerialize, hoping to make some correlation to when and where they wind up. Buttons are pushed and switches are flipped, waiting for the indication that the machine is ready to take them to another destination, and when it does the group once again rolls the dice and pulls the switch.

Danger Zone

The TARDIS materializes in a storeroom of some kind on what appears to be a futuristic spacecraft. The group begins exploring the surrounding corridors when the ship rocks and alarms begin to sound. The five try to return to the TARDIS, only to find the way back blocked by a bulkhead door. They look for another way around, but soon become lost in the maze of maintenance tunnels. The spacecraft is again rocked by something, an impact or explosion, and the group stumble. When they pull themselves up the five are face-to-face with a young man in a disheveled uniform.

The man's name is Jeff and he is a member of the maintenance crew of the ship. Jeff mistakes the time travelers for passengers and asks how they got into the maintenance areas. The group try and bluff their way through the conversation while also trying to learn more about where they are. They manage to find out that they are on an interstellar cruise ship, and that some kind of disaster has happened though Jeff is not sure about details as he has been simply trying to get to safety at this point. It becomes clear that the group won't be able to get back to the TARDIS until the situation stabilizes so they decide to stick with Jeff.

The group follows Jeff as he navigates around damaged sections before finally reaching some kind of auxiliary control room. Now able to get some information, which he relays to the others, Jeff sees that the ship has been struck multiple times. He explains that as part of the cruise's entertainment the ship was supposed to pass close to a comet to give the passengers a show, but somehow the ship got too close and some debris from the comet struck the ship. On top of this the ship's shields somehow failed, leading to much greater damage. Now the ship is drifting and is right in the path of the comet's nucleus; unless something can be done the ship will collide with the comet and be destroyed!

Even without the looming threat of the collision, Jeff learns that the debris impacts have started plasma fires in the engineering section which are generating radiation that will eventually flood the passenger areas and kill everyone on board. Jeff is on the verge of panic, but Logan calms him down and asks what can be done. Jeff isn't sure, with the biggest problem being that he cannot raise anyone on the bridge so he is not even sure if there is anyone in control right now. Zehra asks how they can try and get control of the ship back, and Jeff answers that he isn't sure but does know that it cannot be done from where they are right now.

Encouraged by the group, Jeff tries to get them to somewhere they can do some good. After navigating some access tunnels and more corridors the group eventually reach the passenger areas of the cruise ship. There are more crew here, but they are mostly stewards and others whose jobs are tending to the needs of the passengers. Jeff is the first member of the command or support crew that anyone in the passenger areas have seen. The stewards tell the group that they have been working to keep the passengers calm and have been trying to keep them in their cabins for their safety. They have heard nothing from the bridge and, more worryingly, it appears that the life boats have all been disabled, a clear sign of sabotage. The group ponders why someone would sabotage the cruiser, until one of the chief stewards takes them into his confidence and tells them that there are VIPs traveling aboard incognito, members of the Royal Family (the group do not get the chance to ask exactly what Royal Family he is talking about).

If someone has deliberately sabotaged the ship then it is even more important to regain control. Jeff and the team try for the bridge, but when they reach one of the access corridors they find themselves starting out into space; the entire bridge area is gone, destroyed, and only an emergency force field is holding back the vacuum. With the bridge gone and engineering full of plasma fires and radiation, Jeff does not know what to do. When Ursa asks if there is water to put out the fires at least Jeff just gives her a confused look, but Zehra points out that the cometary halo is full of water. It takes Jeff a moment but he eventually realizes what she is saying and agrees that if they can somehow redirect the ship's course away from the nucleus but through one of the erupting ice water geysers not only would it prevent the collision but it would also put out the plasma fires and stop the radiation.

The only problem then is how to change the ship's course when the main and auxiliary control areas have been destroyed or are too hazardous to get to. Jeff can only think of one thing, the ship will need to be moved from the outside. He thinks they might be able to use some of the ship's maintenance pods to impart enough momentum to push the ship into a new course. Jeff races to one of the pod bays with the group hot on his heels. One pod will not be enough, but the group offers to help. Somewhat reluctantly Jeff explains how to work the pods and Logan, Maryanne, and Zehra all volunteer to help. Eileen and Ursa will remain inside and help monitor the activity, using a maintenance panel to keep an eye on the ship's course and the docking bay systems to stay in contact with the people in the maintenance pods.

The four all get into maintenance pods and with Jeff taking point they launch. With Jeff providing guidance the pods all get into position against the hull and turn on their thrusters to start to push the ship. Slowly but surely the cruise ship begins to change course; the plan is working! Suddenly from out of nowhere Maryanne's pod is struck and goes off spinning. The others look around and see another maintenance pod, one apparently launched from a different part of the ship, has rammed Maryanne. It must be the saboteur, trying to stop the group from saving the ship, and now it turns to set its sights on one of the other pods. The saboteur is coming in to ram Zehra's pod next, but before it can strike Logan rams into it broadside. The saboteur's pod cracks open from the impact and it is sent spiraling off into space, its air venting out as it careens towards the cometary halo. Unfortunately, Logan's pod is also badly damaged and he is also losing life support.

Maryanne's pod is damaged and Jeff and Zehra are too far to get to him in time with their pods, but Logan says he is drifting close to the hull and thinks he can get to an airlock. It would mean exposing himself to outer space, but with his air rapidly dwindling there is little choice. Under Jeff's guidance Eileen races to the airlock nearest to where Logan's pod is and readies to operate it. With his air almost gone Logan leaps from his crippled pod, throwing himself towards the airlock as Eileen opens the outer door. Logan's aim is true and as soon as he clears the airlock door Zehra tells Eileen to cycle the airlock. Once the airlock has pressurized Eileen opens the door to find a half-frozen but still breathing Logan.

Jeff and Zehra are able to finish changing the ship's course with just their pods, after which Jeff is able to retrieve the immobile Maryanne and guide her pod back to the docking bay. Once everyone is back on board all they can do is wait and hope. Returning to one of the support stations where they can monitor things the group watches as the ship drifts into the cometary halo. Their efforts in the pods pay off as the ship is showered in icy water by an erupting geyser, which not only douses the fires in engineering but also pushes the ship further away from the comet so there is no further risk of collision with it or any orbiting debris nearby.

With the situation stabilized, Jeff sees that the ship's distress signal has been detected by rescue craft and that help will be there soon. Using the internal monitors Zehra is able to locate the TARDIS, and sees that the area around it is relatively free of radiation. The group sneak away and make their way back to the cola machine, dematerializing before anyone can wonder where the strange people who helped save the ship have disappeared to.

The TARDIS appears to have materialized on Parliament Hill, behind West Block, during what looks like the Canada Day evening show on the Hill. The Ottawa contingent are ecstatic, thinking they've made it home, until they realize the celebrations are for Canada 200 making the year 2067, 50 years after they left. As the fireworks go off at the end of the show the group starts to notice some things that do not look right, namely people seem to be disappearing as they leave Parliament Hill. Suddenly, the whole scene changes revealing that the celebration was all a holographic recreation, except for most of the people in attendance, who are all now filing towards obvious exit points from whatever kind of facility everyone was in for the show.

A voice announces that the Canada 200 show is now over and for people to please exit the simulation so it can be prepared for the next show. The announcement then thanks everyone for attending and hopes they enjoy more of the recreations of historical Canada Day celebrations being put on by Library and Archives for the Canada 4000(!) celebrations - the TARDIS had arrived in Ottawa in the year 5867! The group try to get back to the TARDIS but are caught in the crowd and can't get through.

The group leaves the recreation with the crowd, emerging into a large white hallway, one capable of holding the thousands who were taking part. There are several other doors leading to other recreations of historical Canada Day celebrations, with signs showing what years each recreation is from. Holographic displays in the large corridor display a schedule of which recreations are being shown in each simulation area and which ones are coming up. With the crowd cleared some they sneak back into the simulation facility on to see that someone has removed the TARDIS! Once the holographic show was done it must have stood out and was spotted. The travelers are ushered back out into the massive hallway by security who point out that the facility must be cleared before the next show. They try and find out about the TARDIS, but the security people do not know what the group are talking about. Before they can do anything else the doors to the facility close shut at the team are stuck back in the hallway with the crowds of people.

Among the crowds of people Ursa thinks she sees some decidedly non-human but familiar looking shapes, people who look like they might be of species from her world. Before the others can react Ursa runs off after these people, telling the rest of the group she will meet them back here. The others try and follow her, but they have already lost sight of Ursa in the massive crowd. Unsure of what to do they opt to just follow the rest of the people who had been in the Canada 200 recreation.

The grand hallway exits into the main lobby of the 59th Century version of Library and Archives Canada. Eileen decides she wants to check out some more of the simulations and heads back into the grand hallway, with Maryanne following to keep an eye on her. They also hope to get back into the facility where they had landed the TARDIS once the next simulation starts in it and maybe find a way to locate the cola machine. Logan and Zehra look around and decide to take a look outside but at the last second Zehra splits off, claiming she thinks she spotted something and wants to check it out.

Left on his own, Logan heads outside onto the 59th Century version of Wellington Street. The future Ottawa is gleaming towers rising far into the sky, with layers of translucent skywalks and a dozen air corridors stacked atop each other for flying cars. The Parliament buildings look much the same, except they have been raised up to the highest level of the city so that they still remain above the tallest buildings in the downtown area. Logan decides to explore a little and heads off, hoping that he might also be able to spot where Ursa went.

Back inside the Library and Archives building Zehra is weaving her way through the crowds aiming for what she thinks she saw. Finally she catches up with the figure she saw from across the lobby and taps him on the shoulder. The man turns around with a puzzled look, but Zehra recognizes instantly that this is Jon Prester, the Librarian and Archivist who had helped the group overthrow the dictatorship on Starship Canada. She hopes he can help them get the TARDIS back, so starts asking him for assistance. After some confusing conversation Zehra realizes that this Jon Prester is younger than the one she met, so this must be earlier than their previous encounter and he does not know who she is. Unfortunately, even though he was confused at first, Jon has now also realized that this strange young woman talking to him is some kind of time traveler that has met him before but in his own personal future.

After realizing what is happening Jon starts to get nervous. Zehra asks him what is wrong, and Jon pulls her aside to explain that according to his training he really should not be talking to time travelers because of the effect it could have on the timestream. Jon, however, is having a hard time following those guidelines. Several times he starts to ask Zehra a question before catching himself. Finally he seems to come to a decision and pulls her aside, into one of the areas of the building not filled with crowds. Once he has brought her to an empty office Jon seems to relax a little, telling Zehra that they won't be observed there. He and Zehra start to talk, with Zehra telling a little about herself and the others and their unintended time travel adventures.

Jon for his part is able to give Zehra some valuable information in return. Firstly he confirms that their ship is indeed called a TARDIS, and he goes on to explain that it was built by an advanced race called Time Lords who come from a planet called Gallifrey. He goes on to explain that the Time Lords were apparently involved in a devastating conflict called the Time War with a race of evil beings called Daleks and that both were seemingly wiped out in the conflict. Jon grows more nervous, then tells Zehra that he really shouldn't say any more and that she should go before they both get into trouble. The last thing he tells her before she leaves is that he knows more about her and the others than he can say, because apparently Library and Archives in this time period has classified files on all of them, files concerning historical events the group were involved in that are still in the groups' own future. With that Jon shows Zehra back to the lobby and then tells her how to get to the storage areas where the TARDIS was probably taken.

Meanwhile, Ursa has followed her targets out of the building and onto the street in front. Outside in bright sunshine and rarefied air there are throngs of tourists. Through these crowds Ursa again catches sight of the non-humans she spotted before, or at least others like them because there seem to be several groups. When Ursa does catch up with one of them she realizes her mistake. While they are humanoid animals they are not from Ursa's homeworld. Talking with them she learns they are mostly soldiers, or former soldiers. During a recent intergalactic war there was a shortage of troops so the government began genetically uplifting some animals to serve in the armed forces. Moose people, bear people and beaver people are the most common. They are here in Ottawa during the Canada Day 4000 celebrations to protest and draw attention to their postwar treatment, demanding the government assist them as they would other veterans. So unfortunately Ursa is no closer to learning the location of her home, but she at least is able to spend time with beings that remind her of home.

Having wandered a bit Logan has returned and finally spots Ursa talking with the other humanoid animals. He joins her and talks a bit with the animal soldiers, and as a former soldier himself sympathizing with their plight. He and Ursa then go back inside the Library and Archives building. In the lobby they spot Eileen and Maryanne, who have finished participating in another couple of recreations, namely the Centennial celebration from 1967 and a Canada 500 celebration from 2367. Zehra spots the four of them and proceeds to tell them what she learned from Jon Prester about the Time Lords, the Time War, and that they apparently will have many more adventures some of which will be in the past and will be recorded by Library and Archives. Maryanne seems disturbed that there are records of the group, or at least records of her, but she does not explain to the others why this upsets her.

Following the instructions she was given by Jon Prester, Zehra is able to lead the others to the storage area in the building. Sure enough they spot the TARDIS, which has been stashed in a room waiting for someone to examine it. Zehra pops in the coin and the travelers swiftly go inside before anyone spots them. They make yet another attempt to set some coordinates and cross their fingers before pulling the switch and heading off into the Time Vortex yet again.

The Colony

This time the TARDIS has brought the reluctant travelers to a lightly wooded area. As they explore, the woods thin out and the team sees what looks like a log farmhouse surrounded by some fields. Coming to the farmhouse the five are met by a young girl, eleven year-old Eloise Harker. She asks if the group is there to help, and when they ask what has happened Eloise explains that all the adults have disappeared.

The team ask Eloise more questions, and learn that it is 1791 and that they are in relatively recently settled land near Lake Superior. The area had been part of the British colonial Province of Quebec, but had been ceded to the newly formed United States of America in the Treaty of Paris in 1783. The Harkers are one of seven families that have established farms in what is now American territory. Two days earlier there were strange shooting stars in the night sky and the next morning all the adults went missing. Eloise is the oldest child in the colony and when her parents went missing she rode to the nearest neighbor only to find the childless couple there were also missing. She went to all the remaining farms and found that all the adults were gone. She gathered all the other children and brought them to her farmhouse to keep them safe and was trying to decide what to do next when the group arrived.

The team offer to help so Eloise says she will accompany them and she leaves the two oldest boys, 10 year-old twins Robert and Thomas Jackson, in charge of the other kids (there are nine in total, including Eloise, ranging in age from two years-old to Eloise's eleven). The group piles into Eloise's family's wagon and she sets out to show them around the area. They do not have to go far before they start to feel something is off. Logan and Maryanne both start to hear a faint buzzing sound that is giving them headaches. At the same time Ursa senses something strange about the ground they are traveling over.

Eloise stops the wagon and Ursa checks the ground more closely. She senses that something is slowly moving under the earth, and it seems to be heading back towards the farmhouse. The group doubles back and Ursa takes her pickaxe and starts to dig down towards what she can sense. A few feet down she strikes something that sends out a massive shock of electricity. Only the wooden handle of her pickaxes saves Ursa, and the blast was strong enough to melt the head of the pickaxes and split the handle in two.

Looking down into the hole the group sees a strange pulsing crystalline structure that is slowly moving towards the farmhouse, following a vein of what Ursa thinks is copper ore through the ground. Unsure of how to stop it, they instead get the kids out of the farmhouse and send them to the next nearest farm for safety. The crystal attempts to pursue, though it moves slowly; but the group also notice that once the kids are riding away on horseback something causes the crystal to pull back.

Once the children are safely on their way Ursa says she can follow the copper vein to track the crystal back to its origin point. The group lets Ursa take the lead, and Eloise insists on coming as well as she is familiar with the territory. They follow the trail for a few kilometers before coming on a hillside with a fresh crater, possibly from the strange shooting stars Eloise had told them about. The crater is partially sealed, but there is a sense that they have found the epicenter of whatever is happening. The buzzing that has been affecting Logan and Maryanne has grown worse, and suddenly the two begin acting like they are in a trance. The two ignore the efforts of the others to get their attention, so the team can only follow them. Logan and Maryanne head to what looks like a fissure in the ground and climb in. Following the two in the others eventually come to a cavern filled with strange glowing blue slime and more of the unusual crystals. They see the missing adults from the colony embedded in the walls, encased in the crystal. The crystal is starting to grow around Logan and Maryanne, threatening to entomb them as well.

The group first tries to free the imprisoned adults, but the crystal that encases them carries an electric current and Zehra thinks that the slime might be feeding off the prisoners' bio-electricity. Sensing the intruders, the slime begins to shift and move towards them. Eileen suddenly wonders if maybe the crystal back at the farm had backed off because of the sound of the horses. Realizing that she can use the current generated in the crystal to power her amp Eileen gets out her bass guitar, jury-rigs a connection and hooks up her gear. As soon as Eileen starts playing she is proven right, as the low frequency sounds from the bass cause the slime to back away. With the guitar and amp drawing off some of the current from the crystal, Ursa is also able to start freeing the imprisoned adults.

The group are still at a loss for how to deal with the creature, however, until at last Zehra realizes that the electricity might be the key. Zehra remembers that Eileen still carries around the the inverter she uses to help recharge her gear (something she hasn't been able to use as of late due to a lack of compatible power source). Zehra gets the inverter from Eileen's shoulder bag and then gets Ursa to identify the copper-bearing areas inside the cavern. While Eileen continues to keep the slime at bay, Zehra starts rigging the inverter. As soon as the adults are clear, Zehra connects the inverter to the electrically-charged crystal and uses the copper in the cavern walls to redirect the flow of electricity back into the slime. Since the inverter has changed the direct current the creature was producing to an alternating current, the slime can no longer tolerate it. The built up electrical charge in the crystals surges back into the creature with a blast strong enough to utterly destroy the slime. The resulting discharge also destabilizes the cavern and with the freed prisoners still groggy from their ordeal it is up to Eileen, Ursa, Zehra and Eloise to swiftly guide them out of the creature's lair.

The group are able to get to the surface in the nick of time as the cavern collapses, burying all that remains of the slime creature and its crystals. Once Eloise has loaded up the adults in the wagon the time travelers decide they would rather not stick around to answer what will probably be some awkward questions, so they bid farewell to Eloise and thank her for her help. The young girl is equally grateful for the group, as without them the adults would not have been rescued. The team heads back to the TARDIS and once again randomly operate the controls in the hope that the next trip will take them home.

Pyramid Planet

The TARDIS lands on a new world and immediately the lights begin to flicker. Something seems to be affecting the power. The travelers step outside to check out the surroundings and find that they are in a vast desert on an alien world. Three moons hang in a sky of strange constellations, with a fourth moon slowing rising above the far horizon.

The group head out to explore their surroundings, but have not ventured far before they notice that the landscape seems to be changing rather rapidly. They turn back, but the TARDIS is nowhere in sight, the surrounding dunes have completely changed shape concealing their path. The sands around them start to move, and they see a wave of sand rise up and start to sweep towards them. All five travelers break into a run, hoping to somehow escape the wall of sand swiftly approaching.

Suddenly a shadow rises up in front of them; it is a vehicle of some kind, a large off-roader with massive balloon tires that help it move across he sand. A door opens and someone inside frantically beckons towards the group. They run for the vehicle and as soon as they are aboard it takes off at a swift pace, riding over the dunes like a boat in choppy seas. The person who let them in has settled into the front passenger seat and both she and the driver are focused on the vehicle's course, ignoring the new passengers for the moment.

The vehicle crests a particularly large dune, going airborne for a moment before touching down again on the sand. In the distance the group can now see a massive pyramid with a small walled compound set up along one side of the base; and the vehicle they are riding in is making a beeline for a gate in the compound wall. They get through just as a massive sand wave crashes into the wall, and the group can see there is a force field of some kind that extends above the top of the wall that is keeping the sand from getting in.

Now that they are safe inside the compound the travelers exit the vehicle, followed by their rescuers. The woman introduces herself as Andrea and the driver is Carlos. They are part of an archaeological expedition to this planet, investigating the pyramids. Pyramids, as in plural, the group asks, and Andrea tells them that there are fourteen giant pyramids like the one they are under right now scattered across the planet and there are archaeological teams investigating each of them. This one is designated as Site Lambda, the fourteen being named sequentially from Alpha to Xi and this one being the eleventh. She leads the five into a nearby building, which turns out to house the mess hall for the compound. Inside she introduces them to Garth, the mechanic who helps keep the compound running.

When asked where they came from, the group says that their ship experienced some strange power fluctuations and they landed here, neglecting to provide any more detail as to the exact nature of their transport. Garth nods in agreement, as apparently the compound occasionally gets hit with power problems as well. He thinks it is due to some static electric effect of the planetary desert. Zehra is curious about the planet, and Andrea explains that it is almost completely covered in the sand, and that the multiple moons cause a kind of effect that makes the sand behave more like an ocean, with tides and waves. It has taken the teams many months just to uncover enough of the pyramids to expose potential entrances and set up the compound perimeter to keep the sand out.

Garth shows the group around the mess and demonstrates how to use the robo-kitchen to get some food when he realizes none of them know how it works. Poking around, Zehra does manage to learn that it is the year 3175 and that the teams are from an institute on Earth. They each get some food, with the vegetarian options in the robo-kitchen being particularly welcomed by Zehra and Ursa. Settling down to eat, the five start to wonder how they can get back to the TARDIS when the lights in the mess hall start to flicker. Cursing, Garth heads out to try and stabilize the compound power.

As the group are finishing up their meals the lights flicker again and then go out completely, plunging the mess hall into darkness. Eileen and Maryanne each pull out a lighter and use them to provide a little illumination. The door pushes open and Garth comes in with dire news. The power is out all over the compound, including the perimeter force field. The group head outside, as do most of the others in the mess hall. Someone cries out and points to the wall, there is a massive sand tsunami approaching and without the force field the compound will be buried. People start to panic, and Logan asks Andrea if there is anywhere they can take shelter. She indicates that the only thing that will be able to withstand the tsunami is the pyramid. Logan calls out for everyone to grab what supplies they can and head for the pyramid.

At the base of the pyramid a ramp has been set up leading to an entrance the archaeologists have opened in the wall. Andrea and another senior member of the expedition, Marks, are ushering everyone inside. Everyone rushes back from the entrance as the sand wave crashes in. Sand pours in through the entrance, not enough to fill much of the interior of the entry chamber but still sufficient to completely cover the entrance. The artificial lights that the expedition set up go dark, but the chamber is still filled with light, light being generated by the pyramid itself! The members of the expedition are scrambling to make use of their equipment, all of which is quickly losing power. Eileen is the one to point out the likely cause, the pyramid itself is what has been causing the fluctuations and power drain.

Zehra wonder that if the pyramid is powering up, then maybe there is something inside that can help. She and the others are ready to explore the interior of the pyramid, much to the surprise of the archaeologists. Angela and Carlos quickly jump to join the group as they head into the pyramid, to help keep them out of trouble if nothing else. Equipping themselves with the manual gear that still works without power, the makeshift squad heads into the interior of the structure.

It becomes clear that the pyramid builders did not leave the structure without defenses. The group encounters a series of traps, including pressure plates that trigger lethal blades and drop-away sections of floor that threaten to tumble the unwary into seemingly bottomless pits. Ursa's talent with tunnels and structures comes in very handy, as she is often able to discern the location of traps. Logan and Maryanne often act as muscle, helping bridge large gaps to help the others cross. The time travelers have an extra edge as well, because the strange function of the TARDIS that lets them understand language no matter where or when it brings them to also works on the writing in the pyramid, letting them instantly read any markings. Interpreting the markings is another matter, but Zehra and Eileen are often able to figure things out.

Eventually the group reaches what they believe to be the center of the pyramid. Once there they realize that the central chamber is a control room. The pyramid is actually a starship, with a seat for a single pilot. With the team's help the archaeologists are able to decipher enough to learn that the pyramids were left behind by an ancient race that left to explore another galaxy. The pyramids have been buried under the sand, but with the archaeology teams uncovering them, and inadvertently providing power, the pyramids are ready to launch to take whoever found them to join the builders in the new galaxy.

However it becomes clear that the pyramids cannot take off without a pilot, and before anyone can react Carlos sits in the pilot seat. Andrea is shocked, but Carlos explains that this is what they were here for, to make new discoveries, and by traveling with the pyramids he can open up a whole new galaxy of discoveries. With the pilot in place the pyramids are ready to take off. Carlos tells the rest that he will delay for as long as he can, but they all have to get clear of the pyramid. Now that he is connected to the pyramid he can tell that the archaeology team that stayed behind has cleared the entrance so they can all get clear. Andrea is reluctant to leave, but Logan and Maryanne grab her and everyone races back to the entrance chamber.

Once the group and the archaeology team are clear they watch as the pyramid breaks free from the sand and begins to climb into the sky. Soon it is just a point of light, but they can see the other pyramids have joined it. Then in a flash they all vanish, headed out into the unknown. With the pyramids gone the power starts to come back on in the compound, which makes it easier to clear out the sand. The archaeologists are also able to help the travelers locate the TARDIS under the dunes and dig it out. The archaeologists are surprised when they see that it looks like an ancient vending machine, but the travelers duck in and take off before they need to answer any awkward questions.

New France

Taking a look through the clock face this time, Zehra sees the TARDIS has decided to materialize in a dirt alley between a pair of wooden buildings. Stepping outside the team find themselves inside a walled compound with a few small buildings, a chapel, and one large building. There are some horses and people, and a small procession is making its way to the large building. When the travelers get a closer look at the people in the procession they recognize one as Samuel de Champlain, looking about twenty years older than when they had first met him.

The compound must be one of the habitations of Quebec, and sure enough some circumspect investigating reveals that they are at the future site of Trois Rivieres and that it is the year 1634. The team follow the procession into the main building of the colony to see if they can find out what is going on. There is a moderate amount of security, but Zehra and Maryanne manage to sneak into the room where the procession is going before the doors are shut. Left outside, the rest of the team start exploring the rest of the building and other parts of the compound.

Inside the room Samuel de Champlain welcomes several of the other people and Zehra learns that these are recent arrivals from France and have come under the orders of King Louis XIII. The head of this group is a Jesuit priest, a Father Alphonse Robert, and he is seeking information, specifically maps and any tales and legends from the local native population. Maryanne eavesdrops on some of the other members of Father Robert's retinue and hears that in fact they are on a secret mission for Cardinal Richelieu. The Cardinal had hear tales of something called the Kingdom of Saguenay, based on an Iroquoian legend, according to which there was a kingdom to the north of blond men rich with gold and furs, in a place they called Saguenay. Richelieu has sent the Father to lead an expedition to find the Kingdom of Saguenay and claim its riches for France.

The initial meeting breaks up and Zehra and Maryanne rejoin the others. Maryanne tells what she overheard and the group soon realizes that the legendary Kingdom of Saguenay refers to the Viking settlement they had encountered centuries earlier. As far as the team knows the Vikings abandoned that settlement, and presumably took any valuable treasures with them. The real danger then is if the Wendigo creature that was buried in the caves might still be alive after all this time. Any expedition to seek out the settlement might then be in great danger if they accidentally stumble across or free the Wendigo.

The team starts trying to figure out a way to maybe join the proposed expedition, even though it would mean leaving the TARDIS behind for an extended period of time. They split up to see if they can gather any more information, or find any expedition members they might be able to befriend. Eileen is hanging around the chapel when she spots one of the presumed expedition members, a man in a long black coat, who also seems to be keeping an eye on her. She tries to evade the man's attention, but he catches up to her and confronts Eileen with the knowledge that he knows she is a time traveler.

The man calls himself Franz Richter, and he reveals to Eileen that he is also a time traveler. Richter tells Eileen that he used to be a Time Agent from the 51st Century. He has quit the Time Agency and now uses his time travel device to make money for himself. To avoid detection and not risk the timeline he has been seeking out legendary lost treasures, since according to history these riches are by definition lost or never existed. This means that if Richter can locate and retrieve these treasures he is not interfering with history, and this time around he has his eyes on the riches of the Kingdom of Saguenay.

Eileen convinces Richter to meet with the rest of her friends. They explain to Richter their encounter with the Vikings and the Wendigo creature. Richter believes them and accepts that even if an expedition could locate the lost settlement there would be no treasure, and more importantly there could be a dangerous creature there. Convinced, Richter then says he will help dissuade Father Robert from proceeding with the expedition. He works with the team to craft a story that will help persuade the Father that the Kingdom of Saguenay is a myth and that the expedition would be a waste of time and resources. It takes some effort, but Richter is able to convince the Father to rethink the expedition, at least until there is some real evidence to back up the existence of the Kingdom of Saguenay.

This accomplished the group takes the opportunity to talk to an actual experienced time traveler. When they explain that they actually have no control over where their time machine goes and have been trying to get home, Richter offers his help. Richter uses something called a Vortex Manipulator to travel through time, and he can take one person with him when he does. It would take multiple trips, but he could get the team members home, or at least the ones who come from Ottawa in the year 2017. The travelers are not sure if they can trust Richter though, but in the end Logan volunteers to go with him to let the rogue Time Agent prove that he can get them home. Richter programs his Vortex Manipulator, a device he wears on his wrist, and getting Logan to hold on to his arm he gets ready to set off. Logan tells the others that if this works he will get Richter to bring him right back so he can verify if they made it to 2017. With everything ready, Richter activates the Vortex Manipulator and he and Logan disappear in a flash of light and smoke.

For Logan it feels like the most bumpy, stomach-churning, intense rollercoaster ride ever. And it lasts for what feels like simultaneously an eternity and an instant. When it is over Logan finds himself tumbling over rough ground. When he picks himself up, one look at the sky told him this is not Ottawa in 2017. A short distance away Richter has picked himself off the ground and is fiddling with the device on his wrist. Richter says that there was some kind of disturbance in the time vortex, a barrier or something at the time-space coordinates for Ottawa in 2017 and he needs a second to figure out where they have materialized.

As Richter works his device, Logan takes a look around. The pair are amidst some ruined buildings, and the damage looks recent. Logan also sees some small fires burning in the vicinity. A sound draws Logan's attention and he spots people scattered around the rubble of some buildings, and many appear to be injured. Unslinging his shoulder bag with his medical supplies, Logan rushes over. The injuries are varied, from cuts and scratches to burns and broken bones. As he starts treating the injured another presence makes itself known. Some kind of robot or machine comes into sight, roughly cylindrical with a dome on top, a single eyestalk, and a pair of stunted appendages.

When Richter catches sight of the thing, Logan sees him go pale. Logan hears Richter curse under his breath then he frantically begins manipulating his wrist device. The machine turns towards him, and some kind of laser beam fires from one of the appendages. It strikes just a Richter vanishes; Logan can't be sure if he was hit or not. The machine then turns towards Logan and says "HALT! OR YOU WILL BE EXTERMINATED!"

Back in 1634, mere moments after Richter and Logan disappeared, there is another flash of light and smoke. Richter reappears, but there is no sign of Logan and the Time Agent collapses onto the ground. The four travelers see instantly that he is badly hurt, covered in burns and his black coat in smoking tatters. They rush to his aid and see that the Vortex Manipulator on his wrist is a sparking ruin. Richter leans into Zehra and mutters a string of nonsensical gibberish. He then collapses and when Maryanne checks she tells the others that Richter is dead. They move the body before anyone on the street can spot them, then try and figure out what to do next.

With Richter dead they have no idea of what happened to him or where Logan is. Zehra takes out some paper and scribbles down what she thinks Richter was trying to say to her. The group can't make much sense of it until Zehra realizes that the letters and numbers are all things they can program into the TARDIS console. This might be the space-time coordinates where Richter took Logan. With no other choice the team go back into the TARDIS and try to enter the information from Richter. When they are finished it appears that the TARDIS has accepted these inputs as valid, so Zehra pulls the dematerialization switch and the team take off into the unknown in pursuit of their friend.

Shadow of the Daleks pt. 1

The TARDIS drops the group in the middle of a cluster of damaged buildings. A strange looking sun hangs in an alien sky, telling the travelers that they definitely are not on Earth. Cautiously they explore their immediate surroundings, noting that the rubble and damage to buildings appears recent. The buildings themselves are, or were, relatively advanced looking, made from some kind of stone or concrete that was molded into smooth walled structures.

Near one pile of rubble Ursa spots something familiar - Logan's medical bag hanging from the corner of a partially collapsed wall. The group retrieve the bag then begin searching some more. Maryanne sees movement, and catches a glimpse of figures moving in some of the ruined buildings. They head towards where Maryanne saw the figures but have no luck finding anyone. More movement gets their attention, and this time it is a kind of robotic creature, a roughly-cylindrical object gliding across the ground. The thing turns its single eyestalk towards the group and orders them to halt. The team chooses to flee instead, bolting for cover as the thing unleashes blasts of energy from one of its two stubby appendages. The blasts miss everyone, but blow large holes in the structures where they land.

The team tries to evade the creature, which continues to call for them to halt or be exterminated. Weaving between buildings the group spot more of the creatures, which turn and fire towards them. Eileen gets separated from the others and seeks cover in one of the buildings. Zehra, Ursa and Maryanne try and regroup with Eileen, but are cut off by more of the things. Soon they find they are surrounded and have no choice but to surrender. From her vantage point Eileen can see that the others have been captured but that the creatures are still searching for her. She spots what looks like a large drain or sewer entrance and goes through, finding herself in a series of tunnels beneath the ruined city.

The captured trio are escorted through the ruins by the creatures. They are brought to an area with an empty lot between to relatively intact buildings. The lot is enclosed in a force field and inside they see dozens of other people; it is apparently where the creatures are holding their prisoners. Two other of the things do something that creates a small opening in the force field and Ursa, Maryanne, and Zehra are sent inside and the field closes behind them. Almost immediately they hear a familiar voice and spot Logan in the crowd.

The three join Logan, who introduces them to some of the other prisoners whom he has befriended. Logan fills them in one what he has learned since his capture shortly after Richter and he arrived here. Firstly, they are on a planet called Obsidian in the year 3254. Obsidian is a Human colony world but it has been invaded by the creatures, which are called Daleks. The group recognizes the name Dalek as the beings that were at war with the Time Lords. In this case there seems to be a war going on between the Daleks and something called the Galactic Federation, a war that has in progress for about two centuries so far.

According to the people Logan has been talking to the Daleks have pretty much conquered Obsidian. At this point only a handful of Daleks remain on the planet, with a single saucer in orbit. From what he can tell from the others, this is all the Daleks require to deal with the remaining humans they say are still “infesting” Obsidian. Prisoners are being divided into groups based on physical ability for manual labor, suitability for conversion into automaton slaves, suitability for experimentation, and suitability for food. The group start to think about ways to escape and get back to the TARDIS, but their attention is drawn to the sky where they see a group of Daleks flying by, with a familiar looking cola machine suspended between them with some kind of tractor beams.

Elsewhere, Eileen has been navigating the underground tunnels. Periodically she climbs up to another drain opening to take a lay of the land before dropping back down and continuing her exploration. Apparently the Daleks either have not found a way down into the tunnels or do not care about them, because Eileen has seen no indication of any of them down here with her. After scouting around for a while she identifies one building on the surface that the Daleks seem to be using as a central base, so she decides to risk coming to the surface to check it out.

Eileen manages to sneak over to the central building and finds a hole in one wall large enough for her to fit through. Before going in she uses her spray paint to tag the building so she can find it again if she needs to. Inside she slowly and quietly starts to explore. Heading up some stairs she starts to piece together that this structure must have once been a government building at one time. There are a lot of rooms with the remains of office furniture scattered around, and the general layout seems to an administrative one. Part of one hallway opens up to overlook some kind of atrium and Eileen can hear the sounds of Daleks coming from that direction. Seeing that she would not be able to look into the atrium without being spotted, Eileen works out which upstairs rooms she passed might overlook the atrium. She checks out a few candidates before finding one with a hole in the wall that would give her a vantage into the atrium and, climbing up on a salvaged office chair, Eileen starts spying on the Daleks.

Down in the atrium she can see several Daleks, as well as complex equipment that might be computers or communication gear, but she cannot be sure. She also spots the TARDIS, which the Daleks have enclosed in a force field. The Daleks appear to be trying to scan the TARDIS, and based on what she overhears they seem to be very familiar with what it is. From what Eileen can discern the Daleks are apparently trying to determine the owner of the TARDIS. They are talking about renegade Time Lords and as Eileen watches the Daleks start running through a series of holographic displays displaying faces of men and women attached to strange names like The Doctor, The Master, The Monk, The Professor, The Corsair, The Mechanic, The Deacon, The Weaver, The Hermit, and The Rani. Before she can learn any more, the chair Eileen is standing on gives way. The noise attracts the attention of the Daleks and Eileen must flee. She manages to escape from the building before any Daleks can catch her and she returns to her hiding place in the tunnels.

Back in the prisoner enclosure a group of Daleks come and collect Logan, Maryanne, Zehra, and Ursa. The Daleks bring them to the command center and the four recognize Eileen's tag on the wall of the building. Buoyed by the knowledge that Eileen may still be alive and on the loose the four ready themselves for whatever the Daleks have in store. In the central atrium the four see the TARDIS and they are confronted by a black colored Dalek that seems to be in charge. The Dalek demands to know the location of the Time Lord the TARDIS belongs to, and threatens to start exterminating them if they do not answer. Their scans say that Logan, Maryanne, and Zehra are human and they identify Ursa as being part of something called the "Enkidian Diaspora"; and since none of the four are Time Lords the actual owner of the TARDIS must still be on the loose.

Logan decides to go with a bluff, and starts warning the Daleks that if any of the four are harmed the Time Lord will unleash a Gallifreyan weapon called the "Light Bearer". The Daleks pause and scan their databanks for any information on this alleged weapon. They find none, but Logan sticks with the bluff and Maryanne starts to back him up on it. The four refuse to give any information on the supposed Time Lord, and the Daleks start pressing them. Desperate to keep the bluff going, Logan reluctantly gives a rough description of Eileen as the identity of the Time Lord and the Daleks send out more patrols to try and locate her.

Down below ground Eileen notices the increased patrols and works her way deeper into the maze of tunnels. As she works her way into darker areas she starts to feel uneasy. Suddenly Eileen realizes that some of the shadows are moving of their own accord. A chill goes down her spine as she recognizes the feeling she has as the same kind she felt back in the abandoned high school. A disembodied voice echoes down the tunnels saying "I have you now." A terrified Eileen realizes that the Shadow Hunter has finally tracked them down, and it is here in the tunnels with her.

Shadow of the Daleks pt. 2

On the planet Obsidian the Daleks have captured Logan, Maryann, Zehra and Ursa; and have the TARDIS in their evil grasp as well. Elsewhere Eileen has evaded capture only to find herself being stalked by the Shadow Hunter, which has finally tracked its prey through the vortex.

In the Dalek command center, where the TARDIS is being held and where the captured time travelers are being interrogated, the deep rolling sound of a solemn bell suddenly rings out. The sound is coming from deep within the TARDIS and though none of the group have heard it before it fills them with dread. The Daleks also react with some alarm to the sound, which they call the Cloister Bell. Temporarily putting a stop to the questioning of the prisoners, the Daleks turn to their machinery and start using it to scan the area. From what the prisoners can overhear the Daleks believe the Cloister Bell is the TARDIS warning of something dangerous to her passengers, and they want to find out what is setting it off.

Down in the tunnels Eileen is running for her life, trying to escape the Shadow Hunter that is stalking her. No matter how many twists and turns she takes, it never takes more than a few minutes before the shadows around Eileen start to move and she feels the chill down her spine that tells her the Hunter is near. Time and again she thinks she might have lost it, only to have to start running again. Eileen starts to wonder if she would be safer on the surface, but every time she starts to climb up she hears the sound of patrolling Daleks nearby. Running and running, completely lost now, Eileen suddenly realizes she has run out of places to run to when she turns a corner into a dead end. She turns to double back but the shadows are already surrounding her, and deep in the blackness she sees sharp white teeth start to take shape.

The Daleks continue their scans, and appear to have detected something. As they work their instruments, the alien menaces almost seem to be getting excited. Finally one Dalek declares that they have detected a Shadow Hunter. Zehra, Logan, and Ursa look at each other in shock; a Shadow Hunter! Could it be the same one that had been chasing them, has it tracked the TARDIS here? The Daleks appear to know what the Shadow Hunter is, they start talking about it as if it was something valuable. Listening in the group are able to discern that the Shadow Hunter is a kind of weapon the Daleks used in the Time War, and that there are no known ones remaining. This makes the one they have detected incredibly valuable. The Daleks return to their machinery and the black leader orders another to initiate a recall signal.

Eileen closes her eyes and brings her arms up in a futile attempt to protect herself. A moment passes, then another, and nothing happens. Cautiously Eileen opens her eyes and looks around. The Shadow Hunter is nowhere to be seen. Momentarily frozen in shock, Eileen eventually comes back to her senses and marvels at her good fortune. Slowly, with great hesitation, she starts to work her way back through the tunnels. As more time passes with no sign of the Shadow Hunter, Eileen becomes bolder. When she is reasonably sure that it is no longer hunting her, or at least not anywhere nearby, Eileen decides it is about time she tried to find her friends.

Back at the command center the prisoners watch as an inky black shape slithers into the atrium. They can feel the psychic chill coming from the Shadow Hunter, but unlike before it seems to no longer care about them. The Daleks activate more controls and the formless shadow is encased in a transparent sphere, containing it. The Daleks proudly declare that the Shadow Hunter has been secured. With this task complete the black leader turns its attention back to the prisoners, demanding again to be told where the Time Lord is. Logan sticks with his bluff about an alleged Time Lord weapon called the Light Bearer being on the planet and again issues his own warning to the Daleks. So far the Daleks seem to still be buying the bluff, or are at least uncertain enough to be considering it.

Meanwhile, Eileen has emerged from the tunnels and made her way back to the building with the command center. She again sneaks inside and heads upstairs to find another vantage point into the atrium. Upstairs she can hear the sounds from the atrium again and realizes that at least some of her friends are in there along with the Daleks. She risks a peek into the atrium and sees that yes, all of her friends are there being held in some kind of force field cage. Eileen also sees that the Daleks have the Shadow Hunter, which worries her some but all things being equal she prefers it contained as opposed to loose and chasing after her and the others. She takes a longer look around, focusing on the Dalek machinery in the vain hope she might figure out what they do and maybe how to make use of any of it. Unfortunately Eileen lingers in her spot a little too long, because the Daleks have seen her. With a cry of alarm the Daleks in the building are alerted to Eileen's presence. She races for the staircase to head down only to find a pair of Daleks hovering upward. Eileen doubles back and tries to find another way down, only to be confronted with more Daleks. All avenues cut off, Eileen reluctantly surrenders.

Brought down to the atrium, Eileen is reunited with the others in the force field cage. The Daleks of course recognize that Eileen matches the description Logan gave of the Time Lord, a revelation that annoys Eileen. Even a cursory scan reveals that Eileen is not a Time Lord, so the Daleks begin to question the rest of Logan's story. He attempts to continue with the Light Bearer bluff, but it seems the Daleks are ready to call that bluff. The Daleks decide to increase the intensity of their scans, in case one of their prisoners really is somehow a disguised Time Lord. The group are starting to worry about what the Daleks will do when they realize there isn't a Time Lord at all, but are shocked when the Daleks declare that they have detected the aura of a Time Lord after all.

The Daleks focus their scans at the quintet of time travelers in the force cage, and finally settle on Zehra. The others look at Zehra, who is just as shocked and puzzled as they are. Then she realizes that the scan is not focusing on her, it is focusing on her shoulder bag. Zehra reaches in and pulls out the Swatch Watch that they had found hidden behind some lockers in the abandoned high school back in 2017, but the watch now seems to be giving off a faint golden glow. The Daleks see the watch and declare that a Chameleon Arch has been detected.

Zehra, meanwhile, seems to be entranced by the watch, by something none of the others can see or hear. Logan reaches over to Zehra and then he too seems to have his attention drawn to the watch. When the same happens to Maryanne when she also tries to intervene, Ursa urges caution, but then Zehra turns towards Eileen and Ursa and says it is alright and reaches her hand out. Still uncertain, but realizing that it is this or face the Daleks, Eileen and Ursa reach out and grab hold of their friends. The Daleks begin screaming something about vortex energy, but the group are no longer paying attention to their captors.

With a suddenness that catches the Daleks off-guard, the five prisoners look up and as one turn to face their captors, their eyes faintly shimmering with a golden aura. Eileen reaches into her own bag and pulls out her inverter, while Zehra pulls out the Gallifreyan coin that acts as the TARDIS key and holds it out. Together they somehow link the two objects and with a touch the force field holding them all collapses. The five split up and race past the Daleks, each one heading for a piece of the Dalek equipment. Almost instinctively the five begin manipulating the Dalek machinery and before the aliens can react they are the ones now trapped behind a force field.

As the five continue to work the machinery the Daleks start to panic. They watch as the force field around the lot where the other prisoners are being held is also deactivated, freeing the captive colonists from Obsidian. The Daleks begin to worry that perhaps there really is a Time Lord weapon, and the black leader calls for an evacuation. In a flash all of the Daleks remaining on the planet's surface are teleported up to their orbiting spacecraft, along with the contained Shadow Hunter.

The five time travelers turn to each other as what is happening to them starts to become clear. They somehow know that the Swatch Watch is actually a piece of Time Lord technology called a Chameleon Arch, and that this one contains the memories and essence of a Time Lord who calls himself The Professor. Somehow when they all made contact with the Watch and each other the five were able to tap into the Professor's essence in the Watch, becoming a gestalt entity channeling the Time Lord's knowledge and skills. They know, or the Professor does, that the Daleks' next move will be to simply destroy the planet to eliminate any threat. There is nothing they can do to stop this, but they can help the people still there. The five enter the TARDIS, now fully capable of operating it. They take up positions around the central console and begin operating controls as if they were experts.

The TARDIS vanishes from the atrium, only to materialize a short distance away where the freed prisoners are trying to figure out what is happening. The five beckon the colonists into the TARDIS, which plenty of room for everyone. With the four dozen surviving colonists aboard the five again activate the TARDIS, dematerializing from the planet Obsidian just as the Daleks obliterate it. With casual ease the five pilot the TARDIS through the Time Vortex to another Earth colony world, one a safe distance from the front lines of the war with the Daleks.

With the survivors delivered to safety the five realize that they know exactly how to pilot the TARDIS to get them home, or at least back to Ottawa in 2017. The program the coordinates to bring them back mere minutes after they had first dematerialized from the high school cafeteria and engage the TARDIS. The cola machine spins off through the vortex, bound for the early 21st Century, but the five have forgotten something crucial. Just as the Time Agent Richter had encountered some kind of disturbance that stopped he and Logan from reaching Ottawa in 2017 so too does the TARDIS encounter something, except the effect on the TARDIS is much worse than had happened to Richter and Logan. The five travelers are sent flying as sparks explode from the central column and the TARDIS begins to spin out of control.

Memory Lane

In the console room alarms are blaring and lights are flashing, but no one responds. Lying about the room are the five travelers, all unconscious and oblivious to the disaster unfolding around them.

The five find themselves on a hilltop in the sunshine, with the smell of the sea in the air. They look around and see a town or village, and further off what looks to be a walled city. The architecture looks decidedly Ancient Greek. They make their way down towards the town, where they can see people wearing clothing that seems to align with the Ancient Greek look of the buildings. They are approached by a pair of young men who ask if they need help; and one of the men introduces himself as Socrates! They tell the TARDIS team that the nearby city is Athens, and that the two men are students of a learned man they call the Professor.

Figuring they must have traveled here, but not able to remember exactly when and how they arrived, the group follow the two men to the small building where the Professor teaches. They go in and see an oddly dressed man whose face matches one of those that Eileen saw among the holograms the Daleks were reviewing. This man must be the Professor, the man whose time machine the group have been traveling in. The Professor for his part does seem to recognize that the travelers are not from this place, or this time for that matter, and he greets them. The group are not sure where to start and so stumble around their questions. The Professor seems happy to talk about his efforts to teach other races, his goal being to help steer planets away from superstition and towards reason.

The scene shifts suddenly, and the group now find themselves in a field, with a small wooden building nearby. Investigating, they find that the building is a one-room schoolhouse somewhere in North America during the 1800s. Inside they again see the Professor, who does not seem to recognize them from the Ancient Greece encounter. He does still seem to know that they are not local to the current place or time, though, and asks them what brings them by. Still unsure of what is happening, the group try to learn more about the Professor. As before, he is happy to elaborate on his personal mission. He goes to different times and places where he thinks he can help encourage learning and understanding in people, where he thinks it will do the most good. Zehra wonders if that isn't interference and a risk to the timelines of the planets he visits but the Professor defends his actions, saying he does not give any advanced knowledge, he instead offers guidance and encouragement to help people learn on their own.

Before the group can press further the scene shifts again, this time to a slightly more familiar location. The group are now outside Centennial High School, though apparently not in 2017 but at some earlier time when the school was still open. Inside they see the familiar cola machine, complete with Out of Order sign, but Zehra finds she does not have the coin with her. The travelers then go up to the English classroom where they found the coin in 2017 and find that the Professor is there. As before he does not recognize the travelers from any prior encounter, but does still see that they are out of place.

This time around the Professor seems nervous and asking, almost demanding, to know what the group are doing here, if they are looking for him, and what their connection to the Time War is. The group tries to explain, but it does not seem to register with the Professor. He starts talking about himself, how he is in hiding trying to escape from the Time War. The Professor says he wants nothing to do with the war, that he is a teacher not a soldier. He knows that doesn't seem to matter to both the Time Lords and the Daleks, however, that his own people will eventually want to recruit him and that the Daleks will seek to kill him simply because he is a Time Lord. He is trying to hide here, and is thinking about using the Chameleon Arch.

The group are still trying to piece together what is happening to them, and Logan is the first to realize that they must still be linked to the gestalt they formed with the Swatch Watch. They haven't been traveling through time; they have been traveling through the Professor's memories. The others agree, they are all still mentally linked to the Professor's mind that is in the Watch. The question now is how do they get out? It takes some effort, but they manage to get the Professor-memory to understand their predicament. He is fascinated with the idea that he is not actually the Professor but some figment of the Professor's memory that is interacting with them. Still, he seems to have the Professor's skills, and by realizing his true nature, this aspect of the Professor's mind is able to transcend the memory he is part of.

The school vanishes and the group are in a white void with the Professor. He can see the mental links now, and will try to help the group break free. He gets everyone to join hands and concentrate, to focus on the mental link they had forged. In the memory-scape the link becomes something tangible, a visible gold thread between all of them. The Professor-aspect then tells the group to let go of each other, and to will the mental link to let go at the same time. They do, and there is a bright flash of light. When it fades, the five travelers waken to find themselves on the floor of the console room.

Snapping to awareness, the group suddenly realize that something is very wrong. The main console is throwing off sparks, and there is a shrill sound like a school fire alarm echoing around them. This sound is then drowned out by an even louder and deeper sound, like the ringing of a massive bell. Whatever is happening, it is clear that they have no control over it and the travelers can only hold on for dear life.
